What got you into cosplay?
I have been a historical re-enactor for a very long time (started when I was 10). When I learned about the Anime Cosplay scene I couldn't resist.
What was your first costume and why?
機動警察パトレイバーの山崎ひろみ Yamazaki Hiromi from Patlabor. It's not exactly something you see every day. Actually most people confuse me for con security or a real police officer. If you didn't like the way the masquerade line was set up at Katsucon 04... yeah that was my bad. Didn't realize that the con staff thought I was hotel security and they kinda asked me what to do and actually took my advice ^^;
What is your favorite costume and why?
Honestly it's my WWII stuff. We have a great group in the US and I've made new WWII cosplay friends in Japan. I just really enjoy the Komraderie of group cosplay.
Do you have a dream costume you'd like to make?
A Knight of Zexen from Suikoden III... one day.
What has been your most memorable cosplay experience?
It was in the summer of 2000 at an air show. I was young and wearing my WWII stuff. I was sitting on an armoured vehicle with an MG-42 machinegun when an old man (approx 80sih) stopped dead in his tracks. His eyes got huge and screamed "Git douwn git douwn!" in a heavy German accent. I oblidged, jumped off the vehicle and stood at attention in front of him. He looked from my feet to my hat and exclaimed "You're Perveckt!" He was a German Army veteran who had been captured during WWII and never returned to Germany. To see the life in that man's eyes re-ignited made me realize the importance of my hobby. Seriously, I made that man's decade.
Have you won any awards for your costumes?
Not really my gig, Although, I have made the news paper, been interviewed by several new agencies, been in a Japanese pop magazine, my WWII re-enactment group has been in a PBS historical documentary, and we were recently used in a documentary for the History Chanel.
Tell us a little about yourself
Well, I lived in Aomori Prefecture Japan for 3 years and just moved to Tokyo. I'm an Emergency Medical Technician, but have hung up my ambulance keys for University. I've also taught elementary school as an Assistant Language Teacher at an english cram school in Hachinohe.
Is there anything else you'd like to add?
Having lived in Florida, Texas, California, Washington DC, New Mexico, Japan, and Thailand my favorite place in the world is South West Florida.
My favorite anime
Patlabor, Ranma 1/2, Macross (original), Macross (TV), Gundam (Original), Gundam Wing, Lupin III, Tank Police, Iria, Jin Roh, Akira, Project A-Ko, Ah My Goddess, Azumanga Daioh, Suzumiya Haruhi, Lucky Star, and anything Miyazaki
My favorite game(s)
Final Fantasy Series, Suikoden Series, Dragon Quest Series, Grandia II, Secret of Mana, Chrono Cross, and several old NES games I grew up on that no one has ever heard of. Take "Life Force" for instance. Have you heard of it?
My favorite character(s)
One day I aspire to be like Captain Goto from Patlabor. Might not be too far off actually. (as odd as that may sound if you don't know who Captain Goto is. It's a very real postion. Not fantasy.)
