About Me / Q&A

What got you into cosplay?
One of my friends really wanted to go to Megacon 2007 to meet the cast of Red vs. Blue. He brought me and another friend there for Saturday. When we got there, I saw so many wonderful costumes and I felt out of place not wearing one. I decided that I would make one for the next con I went to, which was JACON 2007. Also, my birthday is on Halloween so I've always had an interest in costumes.
What was your first costume and why?
Technically, my first cosplay would be Vegeta from Dragonball Z. Back in the late '90s, when DBZ was at the height of its popularity on Toonami, my friend and I decided to make costumes of Goku and Vegeta for Halloween. We both grew our hair out and pieced together our costumes. I used my Tae Kwon Do sparring gear for the armor. I spray painted rain boots white, but the paint never dried so I couldn't bend my legs too much or my blue sweat pants would get white paint on them. So, after that night, I never wore that costume again. My first official cosplay was L Lawliet from Death Note. It was an easy costume to make and I had to do it fast. This was back when Death Note was still new to America, so it hadn't become as ridiculously mainstream as it is now, which is why I ultimately retired it after 2 cons.
What is your favorite costume and why?
The Green Ranger from Mighty Morphin Power Rangers (also known as Dragon Ranger Burai from Kyoryu Sentai Zyuranger). Power Rangers was my whole childhood. I watched it from the day it premiered all the way to Power Rangers Turbo. That's where I stopped b/c Turbo was just awful. I met Tommy at AFO 2007. When I learned that he would return for AFO 2008, I searched for costumes on eBay, and I found a very good Green Ranger costume, for a hefty price. I put some money away for a while until I had enough. It fit me very well, but I had to sink even more money into it to obtain or make the parts it didn't come with. I was finally able to show off the completed costume to Tommy at AFO 2008. He enjoyed it.
Do you have a dream costume you'd like to make?
Dart's Dragoon armor from The Legend of Dragoon. It's my favorite game ever and the Dragoon costumes are SOOOOO AWESOME! I have a friend who's working on an Albert costume, and another who's working on a Meru costume. Another friend of mine made a very good Rose costume in the past, and she's given me a couple of tips on what to do.
What has been your most memorable cosplay experience?
I guess it would be the time I went to Anime Expo 2009 and I wore my Green Ranger costume. It was a sort of bittersweet experience. My hotel was 1/2 a mile away from the convention center, so I had to walk through the streets of downtown LA in costume, which was murder on my feet. Inside the convention center, I couldn't walk 10 feet without being stopped. Everyone wanted a picture with the Green Ranger, even more so since AX09 had a mini-Power Ranger reunion. I've always gotten a lot of attention when I wear my Green Ranger costume, but never that much. I liked all the attention, but it severely inhibited my ability to go where I wanted or spend my time how I wanted.
Do you participate in masquerades?
We don't call cosplay contests "masquerades" in Florida. I have competed in 3 cosplay contests, and I've won something in 2 of them.
What was your best masquerade experience?
I only have 3 to choose from. I didn't win anything at the Megacon 2008 contest, so it wasn't very memorable. Anime Supercon 2008 was only a small, no-limits contest so I don't think it counts for much. Megacon 2009 contest made me wait a long time, ruined my whole day, but I still won a Judge's Award which came with a DVD box set worth $50, so that felt pretty good.
Have you won any awards for your costumes?
I won Best Superhero with my Green Ranger costume at Anime Supercon 2008's Halloween costume contest. I also won a Judge's Award for my Action Bastard costume at Megacon 2009's cosplay contest.
