What got you into cosplay?
I first heard about cosplaying back in oh, 6th grade or so when I was hardcore into Sailor Moon, and after reading more about it, I wanted to go to a con someday but didn't know when I could ever do it. I eventually attended my first convention in 2003 (SugoiCon). Memories!
What was your first costume and why?
My first costume was Kyo of Dir en grey's Macabre outfit (J-rock). I chose that outfit because I liked it a lot, and it looked like something I could actually do without any prior sewing experience. My mom helped me with it and taught me sewing basics.
What is your favorite costume and why?
This changes with just about every new costume. I really enjoy wearing my Zidane costume because I love the game, the character, and the type people I attract when I'm wearing him, but I love some of my other costumes for other reasons too. I know that my favorite will change again!
Do you have a dream costume you'd like to make?
I don't have many cosplay goals, but I would like to successfully make at lease one big costume. Something that looks big and flashy. Right now I'm starting on the hero suit of Barnaby Brooks Jr. (Tiger&Bunny) which is totally out of my league skill-wise, but if I can pull it off I'll consider that a dream-cosplay come true since it's...big and flashy!
What has been your most memorable cosplay experience?
Performing our "Death Note Dance-Off" skit for OhayoCon7 by far. My group and I had only performed one skit prior to this (which was AWFUL), so we were still very green to the masquerade thing, and truthfully, our skit wasn't all that great. At the time, the idea was still new, but it was poorly rehearsed and finished last-minute. But to our disbelief, the crowd ROARED with cheers and laughter at our skit. We were shocked and a bit overwhelmed to say the least. As soon as we all got off the stage we were beaming. Then when we were announced as the "Best in Show" skit, we lost our cookies, haha. None of us ever thought we would get an award at a masquerade, let alone the best in show! Even without the award though, the experience was fun enough by itself to make us want to do it again.
Do you participate in masquerades?
I participated in my first skit at OhayoCon4. It was fun, but I would have enjoyed it more if things had been more prepared and more organized, both on my part and the con's, but we have much improved our skits since then. Everyone has to start somewhere! Since 2009 I haven't gotten to perform, but I would really like to get involved again, even if it was just for a walk on.
What was your best masquerade experience?
Again, our skit for OhayoCon7. See above for all the details. I would really like to perform again!
Have you won any awards for your costumes?
Yes, though I hardly consider it an award, seeming as the award was given out by the drunk "judges" of The Reactor. Anyhoo, it was given to me and a friend for my Myaku Kaoru costume and her Myaku Die costume (Dir en grey).
Tell us a little about yourself
I'm a graduate of Indiana University, where I studied Japanese, English, and International Studies. I'm a pretty boring person outside of cosplay, haha. I've recently taken to plushie making and photography and hope to get good enough at both of those hobbies to be able to do something with them.
Is there anything else you'd like to add?
I did foreign exchange to Japan from March '04 - January '05. I lived in Wakayama, and then Osaka for a short time. I studied abroad again in Saitama/Tokyo in 2009, which wasn't nearly as fun, but I still had a good time.
