What got you into cosplay?
In 7th grade, two of my best friends and I went to our first con (A-kon 13) and heard that people dressed up. A group of my friends had gone as the Sailor Senshi for Halloween in 5th grade or so, so we decided to use those (I borrowed mine). We had an amazing time! There we also discovered another aspect of cosplay, the Masquerade. It looked fun so we rounded up the rest of our friends and at the next local con we entered and won the Masquerade contest! The name of our cosplaying group is called RANDUM, and though we don't compete anymore, we still enjoy cosplaying and attending conventions just as much as when we first started.
What was your first costume and why?
I was Sailor Mercury mainly because that was when I couldn't sew very well, the costume was already made, and all of my friends wanted to go as the Sailor Senshi, so I went along for the ride.
What is your favorite costume and why?
My favorite costume for myself was my Quistis costume because it was the first costume I ever made by myself and I was very proud that I had lost the weight to be able to pull it off! My favorite costume I've ever made, though, has to be my Earthy Card, which took three years of off and on work to complete.
Do you have a dream costume you'd like to make?
Probably Wing Zero Custom from Gundam Wing Endless Waltz...I've been wanting to do that since middle school...
What has been your most memorable cosplay experience?
:) Our first ever masquerade, AnimeFest 2002. Even though we were one of the last in line and had to wait backstage for hours, we couldn't have had more fun! It was like we had suddenly been thrust into this bustling and tight-knit community that welcomed everyone. No matter how new you were, how shabby your costume was, how terrible your skit sounded, you were supported, taken care of, and loved. Of course winning Best in Show was the icing on the cake, as well as completely unexpected, but my first masquerade (which I also consider my initiation to the cosplay society) is one of my best memories in my entire life.
Do you participate in masquerades?
Yes, I love them! It's been a very unique way for my best friends and I to get together and work towards a common goal.
What was your best masquerade experience?
Same as my most memorable cosplay experience.
Have you won any awards for your costumes?
Well, my group and I have won for our skits (which costume is accounted for, I suppose) and I won a judges award for my Earthy Card costume at AnimeFest 2008.
Tell us a little about yourself
I'm an '07 high school graduate and currently attend The Fashion Institue of Design and Merchandising in Los Angeles, California. In high school I was also a member of our color guard (the marching band kind, not ROTC) and winterguard. I keep involved in guard as a member of the Phantom Regiment Drum and Bugle Corps's Color Guard and I also teach at my old high school. I also played the violin in my school's orchestra for 7 years. Something kinda interesting about me is that I was on my school's robot team which won nationals (or at least the equivalent to it) in 2007. I love to paint, draw, read, write, dance, design clothing, role-play, play video games, watch movies with friends, sing in the shower, daydream, yoga, knit, crochet, and I'm getting started in photography.
Is there anything else you'd like to add?
My nick-name amongst my friends is Lolo, but I joined Cosplay.com before the name was given the chance to really stick, so my original account is under “Kiniro Hoshi”. Though on most sites, you’ll find me under the name “Lolo” or “LoloHoshi”
