What got you into cosplay?
I've always admired cosplayers for their creative designs and also their love for the characters that they are dressing up as.
What was your first costume and why?
My first cosplay design was of the Final Fantasy IX boss character, Black Waltz No. 2. Although he isn't very well known, I have personally always been a big fan of the Black Waltzes, and even of Black Mages in the Final Fantasy series in general. His design was the most perfect blend of a dark, villanous outlook, and a touch of the surrounding medieval setting.
What is your favorite costume and why?
So far, Xellos has been my favorite costume to wear. Although it can get a little hot for me to wear, I feel excited wearing the costume of my favorite character and many times getting good compliments for my handiwork. It makes everything seem worthwhile for me, and that kind of motivation makes me want to strive to work harder and try to just be myself when it comes to future costume choices.
Do you have a dream costume you'd like to make?
Currently, I have a few hang ups on a few obscure game characters like Ari from Okage: Shadow King and Shyna Nera Shyna from Silhouette Mirage. But then again, I always seem to have at least dream cosplay that I'd love to do when my sewing skills are at their best.
What has been your most memorable cosplay experience?
What might have been the most memorable cosplay experience at Otakon ever.
It was a Saturday, and Xellos would have been my first real recognizable anime character cosplay. I recieved more photo requests than I had ever recieved before, and that made me feel all warm and fuzzy inside. On top of that, I recieved requests for hugs. Hugs! I was a little weirded out by it at first, but everyone I met who had asked for one seemed polite and nice, so I didn't mind at all.
Then there was also a moment when a very hyperactive (and small) teenage girl excitedly asked for a picture, asking me to do a "naughty" pose. I forget what I did, since I really didn't know what she expected me to do. But she was the same girl I later saw singing "One-Winged Angel" at Piano Squall's concert the following Sunday. Who-da thunk it.
Last but not least, I also can't forget the other Xellos cosplayer that I ran into who called me a fake out of fun. She was nearly half my size, but it was fun to banter with her. Hee.
Do you participate in masquerades?
I have such a shy personality; first I'm going to have to muster up the courage to go on stage.
Have you won any awards for your costumes?
I entered the Otakon 2003 Hall Costume contest because I had alot of faith in my ability to work on my costume, but in the end, we came down to the wire (so to speak), and that moment strikes me as being one of my more degrading experiences. - I felt like such a n00b.
Tell us a little about yourself
I have a mother, father, two older brothers, a sister-in-law, and an adorable baby nephew and niece. I am currently living in New Wilmington, Pennsylvania with my roomate, Erin Griner, and am attending Westminster College in order to pursue my academic interests. My hobbies include collecting graphic novels, watching anime, and playing video games. I also have a certain love of classic novels and poetry.
