What got you into cosplay?
I've always really admired the detail of Japanese anime. More so than most American animation, the detail put into facial expression, clothing movement, and even hair is something that has had me very intrigued. I graduated from Emory University with a degree in theatrical costuming - I focused primarily on historical reproduction, especially corset construction. It never quite occurred to me to combine my interest in Anime and costuming until a fellow vendor encouraged me to check out Anime Weekend Atlanta. It was there that that I finally put the two together! So, while most of my current client base is interested in historical/movie reproduction types of costumes, I'm looking very forward to doing more cosplay items.
What was your first costume and why?
For me or someone else? Most of my background had been in tailoring - my mom was a seamstress - so I guess my first "costume" was an original geisha design I did a few years ago. It is the one pictured in my avatar! You can't tell from the picture, but it was comprised of a kimono, quipao, and a large fan backpiece - when it is all put together I look sort of like a mini parade float!
What is your favorite costume and why?
Recently I did a Jack Sparrow! I had a lot of fun with it because it was extraordinarily detailed. We worked with linens, wools, and a very interesting linen/twill/silk blend. Other than costume pieces, I have done a few evening gowns and one of my favorites was a piece that had bias-cut pleats on the front and was made of a shimmery purple/green fabric. Anything that is complicated in structure and uses luxurious fabrics is right up my alley!
Do you have a dream costume you'd like to make?
Maybe some sort of over-the-top-Marie-Antoinette-type ballgown...complete with a wig that has a ship in it.
What has been your most memorable cosplay experience?
Just started! Haven't had too many yet!
Have you won any awards for your costumes?
Yes! Red/Gold Geisha: Finalist for 2005 Q100 Jack-Q-Lantern Ball, 1st Place 2005 Red Chair Costume Contest ($200.00 prize) Ursula: Finalist for 2005 Q100 Jack-Q-Lantern Bal Jack Sparrow: 2nd Place for 2007 Q100 Jack-Q-Lantern Ball ($2,500.00 prize)
Tell us a little about yourself
I graduated from Emory University in May 2006 with my BFA in theatrical costuming. Other than sewing, I like to go hiking and rock climbing. You just wait for the day I get to photograph a gorgeous flowing costume while hanging from a cliff!
Is there anything else you'd like to add?
I really like Asian/Indian food. In fact, if you live in Atlanta and offer to cook me some, I might just make your costume for free.
