What got you into cosplay?
My Final Fantasy obsession, then simply discovering that it existed. My dad helped me with a FFX Rikku costume for Halloween one year, and I was addicted after that.
What was your first costume and why?
Rikku from Final Fantasy X, because I loved her character and outfit and had no idea how detailed and difficult the costume would actually be. Of course it wasn't anything great, but I improved it for my first con, AmeCon 2004, and had a great time wearing it.
What is your favorite costume and why?
Generally I like my more recent costumes the most because I'm always trying to improve. Overall though, Iím probably most pleased with my Esther costume, since thereís so much detail, and the painting, armour and sculpting are not things I normally do. I also like my Alice dress, which was a challenge - my first extensive embroidery project, first time dyeing and sewing silk, even my first time making piping. Aside from craftsmanship aspects, there are a few costumes I love because they're fairly simple, comfy, and I've had a lot of fun wearing them - like Pearl Fey.
Do you have a dream costume you'd like to make?
Not always something specific, but I have plenty ideas that would involve more skill and most importantly, money, than I currently have... At present, it's Yvaine's blue gown from Stardust, which also defies me since I can never find fabric the right colour, which is also affordable...
What has been your most memorable cosplay experience?
My first anime convention was AmeCon 2004, and that was amazing simply for being a new experience. Since then I've become more involved in the cosplay community, and cosplaying in groups at later cons and finding friends has made cosplay even more enjoyable in general. Some other notable experiences were attending my first non-UK convention at Japan Expo in Paris in 2007, and then my fist US con at AX 2009.
Do you participate in masquerades?
Yes, but usually only as a walk-ons.
What was your best masquerade experience?
Certainly not London Expo in May 2005 which was a fiasco, and I somehow ended up on stage with a completely unrelated cosplayer (but that was an interesting way to meet Odangochan I suppose!) Besides that, AmeCon 2004 was my first con, and going on stage for the first time was a great feeling. More recently, I've enjoyed participating in large groups: at London Expo October 2007 with a Disney performance, and MinamiCon 2008 with Wild Arms.
Have you won any awards for your costumes?
Best Made Costume at AmeCon 2007 for Esther Blanchett is the award I value most since it was judged with a craftsmanship interview, and Ame is the largest UK anime con. I've also won an award at MinamiCon 2008 for the Wild Arms group, and several at London Expo - 1st place for my Beauxbatons Uniform and Elizabeth costume, 3rd place for Adora, and Best Performance for The Mighty Boosh series one outfits. Since then Iíve mostly helped out with events rather than entered.
Minami, and (at the time) London Expo didnít have craftsmanship interviews, and certainly Minami was more a fun award than anything else. Iíd still be entering if the events were entirely non-competitive.
Tell us a little about yourself
I graduated in 2009 with a degree in law from Glasgow University. I've found a job, and am living at home with my parents in Edinburgh whilst I think about a career and where I'd like to live longer term. I read a lot, play the piano, enjoy video games, films, anime and manga. I'm not really into any sports, but I ski and snowblade.
