The top of the weapon was made of 1/2" MDF wood in which I sand like crazy to get the edges to be "thinner". The middle portion of the weapon was made out of 3- 1/2" MDF wood shape, glued, palm sand, and then hand sand. The handle was made out of a wood rod with a Beige jewelry cord wrap around it. To connect the two swords together I use a 3/4" diameter x 1/4" thick rare earth magnet (http://www.rare-earth-magnets.com/) at the ends of the handle.
