Thanks! You can make the hex easily with a table saw set to 60º. I've also one it with some careful handsawing and plane work.
MDF stands for Medium Density Fiberboard. It's sawdust mixed with glue and then compressed with heat to make a very dense board. It works like wood but there's no grain to deal with. You can carve it with a knife and then coat it in shellac to harden the surface. You can get it at any Home Depot. Great stuff!
