The fastening method I used for the grip on my shield; for comfort's sake I went with a traditional leather handgrip instead of a big handle. I bored a hole in the foam by hand, used a 2 1/2 inch carriage bolt with one huge and one small washer and a nut to secure the strap on. It holds damn well, too. But it was DAMN hard to get it all on. I repeat, carriage bolts are EVIL.
