We attached steel strap ties to the back. You can see that it goes the length of the boot and stilt, from the heel to the bottom of the PVC pipe. It was too long and we folded it rather than trying to figure out how to cut it to length. The ties are not strictly necessary but they do provide some peace of mind. They also make balancing easier by stabilizing the boot over the pipe. A cardboard sheath would achieve the same stabilizing effect, although perhaps not to the same degree.
