Up close photo of the knotting work. Hair was cut to 12" lengths, straightened with a hair dryer, and folded at the mid-point to be knotted into the mesh with a latch-hook.
I did a quick bit of math: The surface area of the pants is somewhere around 1600 square inches, and I estimate a knotting density of about 8-12 clumps of hair per square inch. That means for the pants alone, I knotted between somewhere between 13,000 and 19,000 individual clumps of hair. Each bundle of hair was made of approximately 5-10 strands.
