You know you're rushing a costume when it's 3 days before a con and you're counting time not in days, but in drying segments for layers of paint and glue. I'd like to say I'll make time later to fix my mistakes, but I know I'm too lazy to follow up on my good intentions.
To make the sword proportionally accurate, I scanned the art book, increased the size to just under 4' (ACen's prop rule limit), printed it and pretty much traced it. YEAH, I'm a tracer. On the left is the hilt, sculpted out of clay, cast out of plastic and ready for sanding. The blade/handle is carved of insulation foam/paper mached/paper clay on top. On the right is my hotel room floor, where this is drying.

Amazing work Jia! And that is so true when cons are breathing down your neck and you are checking every few minutes to see if it is dry enough to move on. Oh man cosplay...

I'm pretty sure I made a fool of myself fangirling over your Beatrix at ACen, but holy buckets it's amazing! This sword is just fantastic!

I didn't tell you this at the con, and its kinda random but; I'm a big God Saves the Queen fan. In every Final Fantasy I am looking for the character who holds that sword. Normally they are all pretty similar so I thought Freya would have it in FF9... but instead Beatrix got it. Its really a lovely sword and you did a good job on it.

Looks awesome - Can't wait to see finished pics of this costume. I know pretty much every cosplay I have done my props have ended up being painted Thursday night in the hotel room.

Perfection. I'm sure it can't be as bad as you say it is. It looks great! And so you just used paper clay over the paper mache? I'll have to try that. I used to always either fiberglass it or just stick with wood the whole way but wasn't satisfied with either method. Anyway, the sword looks amazing. I really can't wait to see shots of this costume. I love Beatrix so much. ^_^
