Hylian Shield Design

Hylian Shield Design - The Legend of Zelda, Skyward Sword - Link
Skyward Sword Link's Shield~

All my props start off like this, basic planning & measurements so things are proportioned to my size. This step is the most time consuming part of anything I make, because this will be my foundation for the final product.

I added my reference picture on the side to show how I ended up making the actual size shield. This is the first time I used a grid system, because I was lazy, and tried to think of a faster way to make it. I had good intentions... but ended up reverting to my old trial & error instead. So it was tweaked~

**Oops.. you can tell who funds my materials... XD

Can you give me the width and height measurements for your sword and shield?

also what paint did you use? xx

I could, but it would be useless. You want them to be proportioned to your height and size, not someone else's. Otherwise it will look wrong even if the ratio is correct. Again, find as many reference pictures showing all angles of both props in mind. Find the ratio for them compared to the character, then find the multiplier to your measurements.

After that, it's just a matter of using that multiplier in everything so you get a properly sized product. I used acrylic paints, because it's what I already had on hand. Be patient with painting, use thin layers so the cardboard doesn't warp because of the moisture in the paint. Let it dry longer between coats, which also helps. I heard airbrush works incredibly well on cardboard, but haven't personally tried myself yet.
