Rapunzel (Disney's Tangled) wig

Rapunzel (Disney's Tangled) wig - Tangled - Rapunzel
Now that everyone and their grandmother wants Rapunzel wigs, I've been itching to make one too! This one is modeled after the actual wigs worn by Disney Park actresses, and it's meant to be worn with the braid resting on the shoulder (so the tip doesn't drag on the floor); hence the curved braid.

The braid is made of three foamcore 'noodles' wrapped with extension fiber. The foamcore pieces were sewn into the base wig, blended in with the wig fiber, and braided.

The finished wig weighs about 1.4kg, which isn't too bad for a wig this size... the foamcore helps reduce the weight while adding lots of volume. Still, there's a lot of fiber in this wig and I would've added more if I hadn't run out of extensions in the end!

long-length (80cm) wig (24 - medium blonde), extensions x7 (24 - medium blonde, and 613 - light blonde); foamcore (rubber foam), plastic flowers

Hi, this wig it truly outstanding beauty. Do you have nay any progress photos in order as your photos seems to be all over the place searching through all the wigs page by page. Just wondered if you have any pics of this foam stuff you used, as I have no idea what foam core noodle is. Also do you have a front view pic. I would love to be better at wig styling but it seems you either have a talent for it or not. I am better at the dressmaking. Someone once left a comment on my website saying my costumes are good but the wigs look awful and let them down. Well I have tried asking in the past for help from people, but hardly anyone helps and if they do get back to me, they don't have any progress pics to help. I know once ages ago you helped a lot with my problem of wigs that need to be pulled backward into a ponytail, and it leaves the edges of the wig showing like parts of the cap etc. Also now I buy better quality wigs that aren't to thin on the sides. Be nice if there was a full video tutroial for this wig as I had such trouble doing a side plat, I ended up making a spate plat on another wig and sewing it onto my main wig, though I had to hide the sewn edge's with flowers because the plat was bulky. This is marvellous.

Thank you! ^_^ I haven't posted a full tutorial for a Rapunzel wig anywhere, but what you need is basically:
- a really thick wig (with a large skin top or a lace front if you're worried about the front hairline);
- lots of extra wefts (use my wefting tutorial to make your own wefts from loose extension fiber);
- pliable foam core (e.g., rubber foam or quilter's batting);
- hairspray and a blow dryer.
While I haven't posted a foamcore tutorial for this particular style, the odango tutorial in my gallery should give you a basic idea how to wrap the foamcore, and how to shape the fiber to the foamcore. In this case, you're just using wefts instead of loose extensions. Start at the bottom and work your way towards the top of the "noodle"/braid, layering the wefts as you go. It just takes patience and practice, that's all :-)

I find it hysterical that you used foam pipe insulation since I'm doing the eact same thing. I've been meaning to make a Rapunzel costume since the movie came out, I've finally gotten around to it, but I bought the foam well over a year ago for it. You did a beautiful job!

Actually, I used foam rubber (in sheets), it's less rigid than foam pipe insulation or pool noodles. Good luck with your wigcraft project, though!

The wonders of foamcore ^.^ The "foam noodles" will maintain the shape when you braid them.

How did you get the braid to curve? This is the first Rapunzel wig I've seen that does that.

Holy wow. Would you be commissioning these perhaps? If so, could I get a quote please?
