Vanille's staff - Heavenly Axis - Extended

Vanille's staff - Heavenly Axis - Extended - Final Fantasy 13 - Oerba de Vanille
My largest prop to date! Well, longest at least. Almost 4 ft!

This commission was a lot of fun to figure out, and allowed me to get some practice with materials I hardly get to use. The base for the middle and lower sections is pvc pipe, and the "antlers" are carved and shaped in insulation foam and mache, with galvanized steel wire cores. All of these bases then had a layer or three of wonderflex to create the basic shapes, then received several coats of bondo for the final, sturdy, smooth forms. The mitama "bean" detail on the antlers was first sculpted in plastalina, then molded and cast in resin six times. They and the two side orbs and center diamond are held in place with more galvanized wire. The antlers are removable for transport and to make the collapsed form of the weapon, and are held in place in slots on the headpiece with screws to lock them in place.

The piece is 100% hand painted and wow do I love the crazy colors of it! It should really pop with my client's Vanille costume!

The reference I was working from, some aspects had to be changed to make the design work in reality: http://i.imgur.com/3dwwk.jpg
