Benten's wig. Behind it: wigs for Ran and Mendou.
My first real updo, No stubbing required! With the exception of some sewing-to-the-mesh to make it more secure, this is styled pretty much like a real hairdo (so it could revert back to a regular long wig at any time).
I pinned a large bundle of tissue paper to the wig head, then pinned the wig over it securely to help keep the mesh stretched out. I started with a very small ponytail at the center of where I wanted the bun and used that as an anchor, steadily building on it and occasionally sewing the rubber bands to the wig mesh, until I'd used up most of the fiber. I pulled the ponytail through a large hair doughnut and wrapped the pony fiber around to cover it. I then used the remaining fiber to smoothly cover the bun, shellacked it with plenty of aquanet, and then added the chain and sewed it in place.
It's actually not very uncomfortable to wear. The bun is placed pretty well so it doesn't pull the wig back--having the doughnut as filler helps keep it light, too--and it's no tighter than a regular wig. It does have a tendency to overbalance my foam wig head, though. I'll need to store it in box or on a peg.
