How do you deal with big air bubbles?

I am going to use a retractable blade to carve the foam down to shape, then with the air bubbles that you mentioned, (God, I hate those things!) I'll use some type of filler like paperclay, or I'll end up paper macheing the spikes (which I hope I don't have to do....it can be a pain.) But I'm still learning things as well, so this is very experimental at times!
