Okay, I've painted the gems, added the tubing, and filled in the outside part with tape (which took forever).

The gold coffin-looking thing is going to be the bottom of the staff- I tried doing the curvier design, but I'm just not that good with an x-acto knife.

Now I need to paint the back of the gems opaque white (I don't like the way it's showing up against the gold), finish the taping, spray the whole thing gold, attach the gems, rig the center gem, and draw on the squiggly designs....

I really don't know if I can get this done by the end of the week. If only I didn't have a job!
