The most time-consuming part is covering the surface of the prop with paper maché. I'm using tiny strips of silk paper and wallpaper paste here, which adds incredible strength to the material while being super lightweight when dried.
It can be sanded down a bit afterwards, but try to make the surface as smooth as possible while covering it.
