I find it depends on just how much I have ons, but I usually wipe off excess eye makeup with a dry tissue, wash my hands (important to both have clean fingers for general lens hygiene and to not smear crud all over your lenses/eyes), take out my lenses and then all my makeup comes off. If you're somewhat careful, you won't get much if any on your lenses when taking them out, whereas if you get remover IN your eyes with lenses in, ohhhh BOY that is going to suck.
