Katsucon Masquerade Judging Tryouts

Greetings to all cosplayers! Katsucon is still finalizing its cosplay and masquerade specifics, but right now we're announcing one thing:

Katsucon 2006 is looking for craftsmanship and presentation judges for the 2006 Masquerade. We know a lot of worthy judges from years of experience, but we'd like to open this up for auditions. There are surely worthy cosplayers out there we have yet to meet, so we will open this up to everybody!

I will ask only a few things. First, if you are a cosplayer who has made under 5 costumes or has never won any awards in the masquerade, this may not be for you and we recommend you not apply. Otherwise, send us links to your pictures (cosplaylab, cosplay.com, AC Paradise, etc) and list awards and judging experience (which may not be necessary to have any). You can email this to:

Kumada6@aol.com

In the subject line, please state: ATTN COSPLAY

We are looking forward to seeing new faces and old.

The deadline for entries is December 25, 2005. Merry Christmas.

- Katsucon Cosplay

PS Any other cosplay-related questions are asked to be held off for the time being. We are still finalizing things, so please reply only in regards to judging. Thank you, everybody, and let's make Katsucon 2006 the best yet!

First question asked:

I have received a question via email regarding the judging. What will be supplied for the judges has yet to be determined. I believe it will be self-evident to assume that a registration badge will be provided, but details regarding hotel rooming and the such has not even been discussed yet. You're catching us at the beginning planning of Katsucon 2006. Stay tuned for answers.

Thanks for the question.

Another clarification after a newly received submission:

Whereas pictures of your past costumes is great, it also helps to state a few tidbits about how you made them. Cosplaylab luckily makes this accessible, but if you don't use cosplaylab, it helps to make mention of how costumes were made.

Also, if you have a preference as to whether you'd like to be a presentation judge or a craftsmanship/technical judge, do let us know.

Thanks again, everybody.

Quick question if you don't mind, does this include Hall Costume Judging also or strictly Craftmanship/Presentation Judging?

Quick Answer?

Hall costuming details are to be determined. Sorry. We're still working out the specifics over here on our side. To put it safely, if you wish to be a craftsmanship judge, be prepared to also do hall costuming judging.

Thanks for the question.

Hall Costuming

We had yet to discuss whether hall costuming was part of the same batch of craftsmanship judges. It actually happens here and there at conventions. We weren't going to make any assumptions until clarifications were made. All we did was warn people that they MAY have had to perform hall costuming judges if they pursued craftsmanship judging. Clarifications are on the way.

PS We appreciate all of the talent that we're finding in our email boxes. Keep up the great work, everybody! Send it all in!

Ahh, I'll clarify.

As coordinator of Hall costume contest, it falls under me to provide my own judges. Hall costume judges will be exclusive to Hall contest as we are pretty much our own entity.

Saeto and I are taking care of the Hall Costume Judges. Thanks!

This was uncalled for...

This is a forum regarding judging applicants, not childish spates. I asked that beforehand. We will continue with this theme from now on.

There are some things to take care of personally and some things publicly. You two know us personally, so contact us personally - especially about simple misunderstandings. Simply put, many conventions use their same judges for the masquerade and hall costuming. Unaware of how it is handled here, I warned applicants of this possibility while I received our own clarification from our superiors as to our duties. Take care of some things with greater tact in the future, please. We ARE fellow staffers for the greater good.

Back to judging, I would like to continue my thanks to more recent applicants. We are finding many skilled costumers stepping up to the occassion and we are greatly flattered that so many people want to give back to conventions. It's mid-November and it will already be a tough decision.

Thanks everybody!

Obviously, there IS a simple misunderstanding here. To wit:

Currently, Tessa "Telf" Dalton is in charge of KatsuCon 12 CosPlay, and no announcement has been made to the con staff, her, or ANYWHERE that she will be replaced by Corey Gough.

All official KatsuCon convention correspondence should be directed to email addresses ending in "@katsucon.org" and nowhere else. Please consult their website for *official* announcements.

Clearing Up EVERYTHING

Richard Kim is the convention chairman of Katsucon 12. If you do not believe this, contact Katsucon or consult the website.

I actually just got off of the telephone with him an hour or so ago, speaking about masquerade scheduling and set-up. This is NOT up in the air. This is NOT something that "is still being determined." This is set.

My name is Corey Gough and Mr. Kim (aka Pocky) has named me the cosplay coordinator. This has been etched in stone. The previous post questioning our authenticity is from a person who is not currently on staff, and is obviously not a person that is up to date on Katsucon news and developments.

These posts are intended for the future of Katsucon, and they have not been aggressive in any way, though they seem to spark aggression from third party people that I do not even know or work with. I could publicly make mention here about some internal details about the person most recently criticizing this, but we are above that. We are only interested with the future of Katsucon, and nothing regarding the past or could-be's.

These postings are intended to reach into the fans and draw interest and promote a new beginning for a classic name in Katsucon. If there are any other questions, they can be relayed to my aforementioned email address or cosplay@katsucon.org (which is still being set up last I heard) in due time.

If there are any other questions regarding what I say, I recommend you address the convention chairman at www.katsucon.org in the contacts page.

Regardless, keep those judging interests coming. We're getting a fine response, but we know there may be many of you who may still be interested.

Details thus far, for cosplayers, are still up in the air. However, we have already discussed masquerade scheduling. For prospective entrants, you will be given the opportunity to not only rehearse on stage, but we will be working to make it possible to have full audio available at that time. As a cosplayer myself, I know how difficult it is to attempt rehearsing a pre-recorded skit with the audio (seeing as the audio provides cues). We will most certainly be mentioning all other updates.

Otherwise, I apologize to everyone not involved for having to witness this. I hope we can look past these distractions to the greater good - making Katsucon 12 the biggest and greatest Katsucon yet.

Ok, I'm sorry if my and Saeto's attempts at clarification were taken in the wrong way. I was not intending to be rude. The reason I decided to clarify Hall Costume's position here and not privately was because it was posted here and I wanted to lessen the confusion of your potential applicants as much as possible.

Sounds to me like this is a farce. Plain and simple... Just my opinion after reading all the posts by this "Corey Gough"

Corey,

I am disappointed with the responses that I've seen from you in this thread. I feel like you and your girlfriend are taking politely phrased clarifications way too personally. If this is your reaction to people, I fear you going off on people during the con, and unlike Sue who had good reason for criticizing the security team last year, you are getting angry at people without reason.

You say not to sink to childish spats and yet you are the one behaving in a defensive manner. Your responses to people are making me very reluctant right now to compete in your contest if you are indeed the new masquerade coordinator.

Based on how you present your credentials as masquerade coordinator and from observations I have made, I, like the user who posted before me, have reason to doubt you have been given the position of masquerade coordinator. When people are asking questions about the masquerade on the Katsucon forums, I wonder why you are not over there answering their questions? Is that not something that a masquerade director should do? I'm also curious as to why have none of my friends on Katsucon staff have seen you announce your masquerade coordinator position on the Katsucon staff list?

The way in which you keep contradicting yourself also makes me question your position. You say that

immediately after making a post where you write

Given that your girlfriend has Shastar friended on her Live Journal, you have staffed at Katsucon before with Shastar and staffed with Sue Shambaugh before, I am incredulous that you suddenly claim not to know these people. Having caught you contradicting yourself, I find it hard to believe the other things that you say.

Answer to one question

I try to ignore criticisms from unnamed people. I have announced who I am, and everyone can ask Katsucon heads who I am. My critics, I notice, often go unnamed. I'm sorry, but it's a personal policy of mine to not take anything to heart from people who can not even name themselves. Also, I reiterate, if there are any questions about the masquerade, post them here or email me. if you wish to critique any otherwise, this is not the place for it.

After speaking with the convention chairman last night, I have been told that I am the only person on this entire thread that is, to date, an official member of the Katsucon staff. As to why I am posting here and not the Katsucon forum, it is because I am not looking to speak only with Katsucon attendees. I'm not making updates about the Katsucon masquerade as much, which should go on the Katsucon forums. I am more so looking for general interest in judging from all around - which includes potential judges who may not frequent the Katsucon forum. For anyone who may notice, this is not the only forum posting. I have postings at other locations, and I am receiving great feedback from them for judging interest. This seems to be the only thread that is proving problematic in any way.

Otherwise, I will be happy to answer any and all questions to people who will at least tell me their names. I have given you my name. I believe my critics should at least do the same and not hide behind names like "friend of the Katsucon staff." As to why I am being defensive, I'd say that is rather obvious, seeing as there is a lot of slander about my credentials and my current position that I have noticed has been affecting the entire purpose of this thread. After all, a piece of art whose authenticity is questioned in even the slightest way may never be worth the same again.

I will also reiterate that interest from potential judges has halted on this specific thread. Luckily there are other threads, so I have a surprisingly deep pool of talent from which to choose.

I will note one other thing for any other detectives on the board:

One dissenter, csueshambaugh, has only made one post EVER on cosplay.com. In fact, she registered a little over a week ago. Does that not look odd that a person registers so recently and only posts on this thread to critique? Since this is getting out of hand, I will also note that csueshambaugh is the ex-coordinator of the Katsucon cosplay who is not handling it this year, and Danny T and Saeto (who are the only ones brave enough to name themselves) have previously worked with the Katsucon cosplay and csueshambaugh. Whether they are handling anything this year or not is not a concern of mine because they would be separate from the masquerade, but in conversation last night with the chairman, whereas they may be involved this Katsucon in the future, they were not officially involved as staff as of yet. I would also like to mention that I thank Saeto for her application to be a judge, along with many other of you. I also apologize for being defensive, even if excusable, to Danny T, as he has been respectful enough to do towards me. I have known Dan for many years and have respected him, so I hope we can work together as we always have. I will mention no more about why one person may not be involved or not. I will only make generalized statements to clear up this picture. Some things are to be handled publicly and some things privately. You have my email address, and my cosplay@katsucon.org ought to be official within a day or two. I'll certainly mention it here when it has been confirmed for anyone skeptical about sending in information. The convention chairman's email address is chair@katsucon.org, for anyone that has further words. I have also sent him this thread, because I spoke with him last night about how out of hand it is getting - especially with unnamed attackers who claim to "know staff." I believe everyone reading this can say they "know staff" of some convention or other. In fact, many of you may know me personally because we have performed live events for Nekocon for three years now (including competing and winning Best in Show as a cosplay entry two weeks ago), Anime USA where I've been the masquerade emcee (and helped with coordination behind Tikki Brown) for three years and have had live events and game shows for four years now, Otakon where I've also run events, and Katsucon where I've been running live events since we were snowed in a few years ago. I am working with my girlfriend, Darcy Dillon, who has judged more masquerades than I can count, and my second-in-command, Evan Doyle, who coordinates masquerades for other conventions on his own. If anyone would like to take shots at our authenticity or worthiness anymore, I have supplied email addresses to my superiors, as well as myself. If you wish to continue fighting anonymously, I will have no part of it. This thread has a peaceful purpose. I just got off of the phone with a trophy maker for the masquerade, and I have to go plan out the application for online masquerade registration, so I will no longer react to these absurd statements any further. I was asked to be the coordinator by the chairman a week ago, I accepted, and I will work my hardest to make Katsucon the greatest yet and try my best to work with everyone as best as I can in the future. I applied for this position because I have enjoyed Katsucon for many years, not because I am going to conflict with others. This masquerade is for the fans and the attendees. Before we go making any more irresponsible comments to further create a skeptical, sour taste in the mouths of potential attendees, think about how that make look to the people who read this and may reconsider attending - especially if you are not (maybe not yet) a part of Katsucon, though insinuate that you may be. WE ARE WORKING FOR THE FANS. This is my last comment on this EVER. I have provided more than enough means by which to prove who I am. Let's move onto a few masquerade details now:

UPDATE: Anyone planning a skit for Katsucon 12 may be interested to know that it looks like you will have stage time to rehearse IN THE AFTEROON and NOT the early morning. I imagine many of you planning a skit will be interested to know this, seeing as many costumes take time to put on, along with make-up, etc. and a 10am mandatory rehearsal time means you have to wake up before 8am to even eat breakfast! We're working to also play some AMVs or something to that effect in the cosplayers' room during mandatory times to at least help the time go by better, rather than sit in a room for three hours to simply walk on stage. We're working to do everything we can to make the masquerade enjoyable in all ways for entrants as well as the audience. Any suggestions are recommended and can be emailed to me or cosplay@katsucon.org within a couple of days. Thanks everyone, and I hope we can all get back on topic! Thanks again!

EVERYONE THAT WOULD LIKE TO APPLY FOR THE KATSUCON JUDGING POSITIONS MAY NOW EMAIL ME AT cosplay@katsucon.org !!!

Thank you everyone for your patience. The previous email will still get to me, but using the official Katsucon email will be a lot easier for differentiating personal email and convention-related email.

Also, everyone with Katsucon cosplay questions can email me at cosplay@katsucon.org for answers. Our updates on the website are on the way.

Again, thank you everyone for your patience and I hope this can finally settle these spates over who is real and who is not.

Now, let's get back to making Katsucon great, shall we?
