Well...digging around for helmet tutorials for my 300 Spartan outfit, I came upon this thread.

I shall make my Spartan helmet with this tutorial, as I followed your tutorial for making katanas for my Bleach outfits.

will this technique be useful for making helmets that require some smooth, rounded surfaces? and can you mix materials such as plastic or carbon fiber into the design? as a matter of fact, is there something more substantial i could use to replace the cardboard and make the helmet more durable? props on the

I have never used Bondo before, and am somewhat hesitant to trying to use it, as I don't have a garage. Does anyone have any suggestions to something that might work as well as Bondo, but is more user friendly?

I've got a simular question to S.L... Do you HAVE to use bondo? I don't have access (or even money v.v) to buy it.

if you dont want to use bondo, i dont see why something like modeling clay or wonderflex wouldnt work. of course ive never used either, so i really wouldnt know.
and im planning a skull sader cosplay and i was wondering if this would work. and for those of you who dont know what a skull sader is, heres some reference pics.

and heres a pic of just the helmet from a few angles.

You can use drywall compound. You can buy it at your local hardware store for about $10 for 10lbs it comes premixed or in powder form. If you buy the premixed stuff you should still add some water to it, its pretty thick. You can buy the powdered stuff in 10lb bags, its usually call 90 or 45 which is how long it takes to dry. Note that it sets up pretty fast, working time of only about 10 minutes. It dries harder than the regular premixed compound and is harder to sand. You should seal the cardboard first, the water from the compound can make your cardboard soggy and deform it.

no i don;t use bondo very much at all

Have you ever thought of hotglueing fiber weave to your paper bases?
Afterwards when you hit the weave with fiberglass resin it seldom has bubbles that need sanding. It may need a few touches but it would be sturdier.
Awesome tutorial by the way.
