What fabric would be best for this dress?

I'm planning to cosplay Princess Emeraude from Magic Knight Rayearth in the (hopefully) not-too-distant future... However I'm lost as to what fabric I should use for this dress:

It doesn't seem very shiny to me, but I don't think cotton would be appropriate... At any rate, I'm probably going to have to buy a fair amount of material to make it, so I don't want to goof-up and waste a lot of money. ^^;; Any suggestions as to what I should use?

Also, what would be a good pattern for the dress?

Thanks. ^^

It looks thin and flowing, but a little crisp at the same time--kind of a frustrating combination. A jersey knit would give you the softness and flow, but taffeta would be more royal and has that bit of crispness. Personally I'd go for the taffeta.

I honestly hadn't thought of taffeta, but I like that idea. ^^ Thank you. ^^

Another thing you might consider is a chiffon layer (floaty) over a crisp cotton or cotton/poly (body).

I suggest casa satin. You can find it super shiny or with a sheen. I used it for my Belldandy costume (man I need pictures of that) and it's gorgeous.

I second Casa Satin. I used it for my Princess Garnet dress and it looks amazing ^^

The Hag: I had thought of adding a chiffon layer before, actually, but I wasn't sure if it would come out looking the way I picture it... I feel a lot more confident with your sewing experience backing up the idea, though, so I think I'll give it a shot. ^^ Thanks. ^^

MisatoNpenpen:
I've been thinking about crepe, though that's the type of fabric I'd want to drape around and examine in person... I'm most likely stuck buying the fabric online, since the stores where I live have rather limited selection... I'll think about it though, thanks for your input. ^^

SailorKnight and Radleia: I'm somewhat hesitant to use casa satin, as I just don't feel like the dress is quite so... shiny. I understand that it comes in a less-shiny form, but if it's satin, there's probably still more gleam than I'd like. If it were for this Emeraude dress, that's probably what I would use: http://img525.imageshack.us/img525/4104/pdvd081le1.png

However, the outfit I'm doing is simpler and almost less-formal somehow, so I want to use something other than what I would typically pick for a princess' gown.

Thank you for the suggestions, though. ^^

I've used crepe a pretty good amount- you can find it at joanns in the casa collection- they have a ton of colors (and of course white), it drapes well I think. I made all my kimonos out of it and my battle ichigo :3

For the pattern I simplicity carry Medevil patterns and you may have luck with those just cut down the sleeves as many of them are a puffy shoulder with a sleeve attached. (ding no sleeve just puffy, Done

MisatoNpenpen: I do like the way the crepe on your costumes looks, so I'll have to compare some fabrics when I buy the materials. ^^ Thanks again for your help. ^^

MsTestament: Thank you for your advice. ^^
