As for steampunk anime characters, I think Skuld (from AMG) would convert over well.

But among superheroes... I dunno. Batman, Ironman, Robocop, Inspector Gadget, Master Chief, and Gizmoduck are really the only characters I can think of off-hand that are defined by technology, not abilities. Superman is superman, doesn't matter what year it is (and Aquaman is useless in all situations).

But really a character has to be defined by technology in order to be any different in a steampunk setting, and in practice there tend to be very few such heroes because their strength also tends to be their weakness (that they are merely the product of man's intellect and will, not something that transcends man entirely). Every universe can tolerate a few such misfits, and they tend to shine when the transcendent qualities of their peers are turned against them, leaving the battle to those techno-specialists who possess the quality of being merely a very exceptional human.


An altogether different avenue for steampunk is to look at gaming. The aforementioned Rise of Legends, as well as Warhammer 40k, and a whole slew of FF and FF-like games have huge amounts of steampunk content.

Just reading this, and I was thumbing through an old issue of Wizard a while back, and it seems that DC did a series where their main characters were set in Victorian era.

And the TRANSFORMERS did something like Steampunk. Grimlock, and a few others were locomotive engines. Bumblebee was a motorized surrey (Buckboard). Megatron was a huge Civil War era cannon. And the jets were like from a Leonardo DiVincci notebook.

And, I just heard of a Steampunk Cylon.

Gotham by Gaslight was Batman set in the Victorian Age. One off, though they did a sequel.

Good point. Though I do love the look of steampunked superheroes, most of the time you have to ask what they are meant to be. That said, the leather and satin look works great in person, usually better than spandex.

I attached a picture of the top. I want to make one like that, but with short sleeves.
