Russian Steampunk: Brass Legion
theres a series of short stories and artworks involving something called the Brass legion. which is like a steampunk united nations kind of thing...
so I'm really wanting to do a russian one, I'm having problems finding boots or boot covers or something, and some pants for it...I would need either a rusty...brownish black denim or some sort of breeches, and I want combat-type boots, or...work boots or something. I'm also having trouble finding those uhm...I think they are called tool packs? they're like...leathery bags for keeping tools in? attached to the belt? I also need a place that sells long plain scarves, I can onyl find long plaid ones, or muffler scarves =[ and uhm...I'm not quite sure what type of undershirt or vest I should wear? I'm not familiar with period russian styles but I'm sure that it wouldn't follow the edwardian dress shirt and vest combo found in alot of steampunk nations. I also need to know if it's possible to attach a hood to the inside collar of the jacket to give the illusion that there is a hoodie being worn under it without actually having that extra layer? I need some suggestions on where to get some steampunky things, or some nifty russian things, and tips on materials, mostly. I can upload the initial concept sketches later, too.

the only thing I can find on ebay is the leather jacket that I want, and it's 60$ but that's ok because I can use it outside of cosplay too.
I cannot find one single male scarf that isn't short or a muffler scarf on ebay :\ and I can't find any sort of...breeches on ebay either. found an ushunka though. maybe I just don't know how to ebay =.=

Long scarves are usually sold for women. Four times out of five it is easier and/or cheaper to hit Goodwill and buy a cheap blanket to take a slice off of.
I don't know what kind of breeches you're looking for, but it usually means uniform-weight trousers that reach the knee and button. Try using the term "knickerbockers" in your search. I doubt you'll find much on Ebay, though, and military surplus ones are not cheap. There are plenty of patterns for them, however: Butterick has at least two specifically for men. You might also have some luck with just cutting off a pair of modern khakis at the knee and adding a band.

oh..I guess I'm not looking for breeches >< I wanted longer pants that I could kind of tuck into my boots.
I think denim MIGHT work, but...I can't seem to find a black-brown color of them, I had it in my mind breeches were a thick cloth pant >< and I'm searching around army surplus stores right now xD It seems that...there are a few things good priced, but all of the actual clothing are SUPER expensive 0_0 ;_; I had a feeling that it would be for women. >_> and I might sound like an idiot but...what's goodwill? I have only heard of it

First off, there's nothing stopping you from wearing a women's scarf. A long rectangle of fabric works the same for everybody.
Goodwill = cheap secondhand clothing store. They're everywhere under different names, so swap in the name of the charity shop nearest you. Carving up old clothes is a grand steampunk tradition. I recommend this especially because it sounds like you're on a budget, not up to much sewing, and either don't know what you want or don't know what it's called. Go look, see what's out there, and mess with it until it looks the way you like. Handsewing a few buttons and hems is easy and makes a world of difference.

ohhh like a shop where you bring stuff you do not wish to keep?
=] and I would love to sew but...I need to get better at it before I attempt making everything from scratch :] granted the jacket I'm getting is about 60USD.$ but that's ok. :'D I think I'll head to this charity shop over the weekend and such and see what I can find. do you have any suggestions as to an undershirt? I was going to use a distressed or raggedy vest...but I'm not sure what kind of shirt to wear under it >< and yes, buttons are good :]

Nope! I have absolutely no suggestions at all. Summon up that spirit of adventure and go forth into the world to see what you can find and what you think looks good. Getting done up steamy requires you to make a LOT of judgment calls based on nothing more than your own vision, so get used to whipping that out.

I know >< I just want to keep it at least a little period >< I'm just not sure what kind of shirts they wore in russia ._.
but I'm sure with a vest, jacket, and scarf, it wont matter much. oh..also, is it possible for me to sew a hood onto the inside of the collar of the leather jacket so it gives the illusion that I'm wearing a hoodie under it? or like..would I have to make it detachable?

Google knows everything. Seeing what comes up for, I dunno, "clothes in Victorian Russia" or "russian clothes industrial revolution" or something along those lines will do you right.
Probably! Try it and see.

This is what Google had to say:
http://www.onlinetoday.com/users/ccoppage/photo.htm Even though this site has info primaryily on women's clothing, you can make some generalizations. What kind of clothing you want depends on your impression. Lower class and peasants wore simpler "traditional" styles, and the upper class dressed in the same style as the developed, Western world.

Pattern for traditional Russian shirts, fairly simple to make with very good, clearly written instructions. This type of shirt was worn by most Russian men from about 900 AD through the Communist Revolution in 1917. It doesn't get much more Russian than this. Breeches are knee-length trousers of a style commonly worn from around 1600 to 1800. Think Revolutionary War-era. I think what you're thinking of are referred to as "thick baggy pants". You can use flannel pajama bottoms, or follow this simple tutorial. You can probably make them out of a light-weight wool blanket, and a bonus of this style of pants is that it's nearly impossible to rip them.
