One year for Wizard World Chicago (I believe it was 08), I dressed as Harry Dresden from the "Dresden Files" series. Only 2 people recognized me, but it was a very fun, cheap cosplay that I already owned 90% of. I just had to make the staff. I'll upload the costume and add the pics to my profile.

One of the best cosplays I've seen was of Lestat and Louis from The Vampire Chronicles.
It made me want to make a Claudia, only I'm too tall. \:

I also want to cosplay Zillah from Lost Souls? by Poppy Z. Brite although I would obviouslly need a Nothing.

I'd like to cosplay Loor from Pendragon. She's only even pictured on the 7th book so it would be mostly guesswork.

I think with an obscure cosplay its more about how much you love the character/book/series then how much you'll actually get recognized.

That is awesome, I love Shirley Jackson. I wouldn't mind doing one of her characters myself, but I would think it would be unrecognizable. Even having read and enjoyed the book, I can assure you I would not know who you were if I saw your costume.

I'm definitely starting to lean toward more literary figures instead of anime. I've done Acorna the Unicorn Girl and Clockwork Orange (mostly from the film, but incorporated things from the book as well). Most of my costumes this year will be literary, although not really obscure.

I do plan on making a Porphyria costume in the future, from "Porphyria's Lover."

I'm going to be cosplaying as Soteria from the Dark Hunter novels by Sherrilyn Kenyon. She met my boyfriend last year, whom she declared would make a perfect Acheron. It only seemed right that I be the Tory to his Ash. We also have a friend who is going as our Simi.

Ooh, a fellow Dark Hunter fan! It's definitely on my list of series to cosplay, but I don't know who. Too many hotties to choose from ^_~ (though I suppose Dragon would be the obvious choice for me).

Another obscure literary character I'd love to cosplay would be Molly Millions from William Gibson's Sprawl series. If I could figure out how to pull off her mirrored lenses...

I've made several costumes that both obscure and from literary sources. Actually, I've been tending toward that more and more of late as my interest in anime has waned considerably.

Costumes so far:

Pharaoh Tutankhamun (Formal version)- From the Lord Meren Mystery Series (completed)
Pharaoh Tutankhamum (Battle Damaged)- From the same (currently at work on)
Bard Stefan- From the Last Herald Mage (completed and retired)

I'm pretty sure no one will recognize me unless they are fans but I'm doing it more for the love of character than anything else.

Man, I would LOVE to do Casimira from the book Palimpsest. I've even bought the brass cicadas for her jewelry...the rest is just a high-necked green-black bustle gown and a green wig.

There have been a few I have thought of myself, but I would like to do a Green Rider uniform from the series by Kristen Britain. I just hold back because I doubt anyone would know it.

For the upcoming comic/entertainment expo in my city I want to cosplay as Vin from Mistborn by Brandon Sanderson D: I have 'word of god' information on what the mistcloak would look like, so I think I could do it....
