Sprocket Gears (for steampunk)?

Hiya! Just wondering, where can I find some gears for a steampunk cosplay? Are there any things in the house (that I could take apart) that might have gears in them? Or is there some way to make the gears myself using clay or something... (though I feel like those might look tacky).

and if not either of those, where could I buy a pack of them? I live in the USA and would prefer to buy them in the stores.

Any help would be greatly appreciated!! Thanks!

What size? You can look for clock repair places, or gear packs on ebay. Maybe clock making kits, though those usually have plastic parts or digital.

For larger, I like the knex gears. They come in different sizes, styles, ect. They would only need to be painted but would probably be much more durable then something you could make at home.

I guess any size will do, since I'm not sure what I'm going to do with them exactly. I want to add the gears to clothing and accessories.

The K'NEX idea is really good!! I will definitely be using some from my old set! Thanks very much.

Good luck with finding them locally. I tried every clock/watch repair place in a 60-mile radius of my place and only found two shops willing to donate for my "Art project". The internet is a good place to look, though etsy seems to overprice their stuff to high hell. ><

You might actually check craft stores. I found a pack of gears in the scrapbooking aisle in Michaels or Mangelsons (Mangelsons might just be a local chain). You might also try hardware stores, I remember someone pointing out something in the nut & bolt aisle that looked like a gear.

Online I found watch gears at:

http://www.mcmaster.com/#gears/=7gimv4 They have about every kind of gear you'd need. The prices vary based on their material and type. I really like this place for hardware and other supplies, they carry just about everything one could want for making props.
