cosplay; too hard?
hi there.
i'm fairly new to the whole cosplay world. in fact ive only done it once (and like almost everyone else, not quite formidably) anyway, ive got nearly, no enterely no sewing skills. but! i want to make me a vincent valentine cosplay. but that is maybe too hard? whats your opinion on this? ah! almost forgot. probably, if i cant manage the vincent cosplay, i was thinking about converting my cosplay outfit i had this year (not much besides a black coat) to be like a sepiroth cosplay. maybe that one is easier to do? |

For someone with no sewing experience, I'd say it would be very difficult. Of course, you can always pay for commission but it will be pricey. It's better to just find a cosplay simple and eventually, as your skill expands, work your way up to more elaborate cosplays.

I would start off sewing simpler things. Then work your way up. It's kind of like any other skill. You can't pick up a pair of sticks and start drumming on a counter and start playing in a rock band. You have to practice, practice, practice. There are more things to learn when developing a cosplay and sewing skills. Things like fabric, stitches, lining, etc etc. You could always comission it for now as you better your sewing skills ^.^

I am in the same boat as you. Wanting to make things just the way I want without having to spend all my spare cash hoping someone else can do it.
I'm going to try to make a Rainbow Dash hoodie, since I've been wanting a comfy cosplay for loafing around in. I'm going to take it real simple too. Just going to stitch on a rainbow cloud patch, colored fabics for her main, and small wings on the back. More or less like the one shown here: http://fc04.deviantart.net/fs71/f/20...xx-d3re36j.png I'm probably going to make a lot of mistakes and it's going to take me awhile before I can get it right, even though it's real simple. Once I get this down, and maybe make some things for my friends, I'll be able to attempt the things I really wish for. At least try, and don't give up! We're not telling you to give up your dreams of Vincent, we just want you to be prepared so you can make the best Vincent and be proud of it! =) |

There is so many "How to's" to help guide you (some just for Vincent), it would just take patience on your part. I'd say learn to follow a pattern, look up how people went about modifying patterns, and spend some time in a fabric shop looking through patterns similar to Vincent's attire. Check of the construction threads on this site, ones on sewing lingo as well the steps for using craft foam armor methods. He's not entirely that difficult, he's just covered from head to toe, so it'll take time practicing on scrap material (old sheets perhaps) before ruining fabric you would buy.
Honestly, he's a great character to start learning with, not too crazy and some armor bits to get you started. Even some intermediate makeup and wig styling in it if you plan for a wig. It's not worth paying others to do some of it, just get as many shots as possible, and break his outfit done, what's attached to what, what goes where and how will it stay. Just experiment, no one is going to rush you, it's your cosplay. We'll just all just be here to help! Just typing in Vincent Valentine tutorial pops up with so much to get you started.

My first cosplay was a Diablo 3 Wizard. Before hand I did not know how to sew or make armor or anything about making costumes. I did read and research online on many different methods for making things. Though for sewing I'm sure someone you know or in your family knows at least the basics to show you.
I basically learned through trial and error and personally to me that is the best way to learn. I think if you have the drive and passion to learn some new skills and enough love for the subject of what you want to cosplay, you will do it justice. ::edit:: When I started making my first costume I did not know about this site. Take advantage of this forum and post work in progress stuff, get feedback and tips while you make your costume. ::edit2:: I do not think Vincient is a hard cosplay. His black clothes can pretty much be regular store bought clothing with many belts. For the cloak and head band I would go to Jo-Anns and look at their fabrics find the type you want. With a couple yards you can make the red cloth. Boots will probably be the hardest/most expensive and personally I never see male boots around places. As for the boot armor and gauntlet and random rings/metal stuff use craft foam.
