I have cosplays already but I'll end up being "I can do better" and scrap one later. I'm stuck because I don't know any short brown haired or black haired characters that don't wear school/sailor uniforms and aren't difficult. With my budget, I can only do closet cosplays or Walmart/Target shopping. It's tough because closet cosplay immediately says "normal" but I don't want anything that looks like an average person (like the Durarara characters)

Please, no L's or anything from Bleach/FMA/or KH.
If the character is difficult, but has a casual outfit, that's good also.

For short brown, maybe Fujioka Haruhi? She has some casual clothing.

She's the first person that came to mind when I think of short brown hair

I don't quite understand. You want to do a closet cosplay and not have the clothing look ordinary? How are you expecting that? Bought clothes will usually look ordinary.
Nevertheless, Ritsuka Aouyagi from Loveless, Reborn from KHR, Yoite from Nabari no Ou and the trolls from Homestuck come to mind.
