Undertaker-- A Basic Guide

I’ve seen many topics for Ciel, Sebastain, and Grell, but not much for Undertaker. So I decided to be really nice and make a sort of guide for Undertaker Cosplay. This post is for those of you who want to Cosplay as Undertaker, but have no idea where to start! In this post, I’ll do my best to describe and give advice (as well as links) on certain “versions” of the Undertaker, starting with the version most people are familiar with:

Wah! He’s so dang cute XD.
Hair: Of course, you’ll need to get a long gray wig. I myself have not bought an Undertaker wig, but I found a few that I’m looking into. If anyone has any advice for the wig, please tell me and I’ll be more than glad to put it here…
http://www.ebay.com/itm/Black-Butler...ht_2212wt_1037

http://www.ebay.com/itm/Black-Butler...ht_1041wt_1037

Jacket— Undertaker wears a long jacket-thingy that suspiciously resembles Snape’s, down to the numerous buttons and mandarin collar. How many buttons? 7 on one sleeve and 11 down the front. The jacket-thingy goes down to below the knee. I would recommend pattern:

Butterick—b5425 version A. You’ll have to modify it, of course.
Hey, don’t forget the white trim under the sleeves and collar!!!!

Over-Coat—For the over-coat, I would recommend the same pattern, but version C with, once again, modifications. Or use these other patterns:
http://www.burdastyle.com/patterns/1...sted-wool-coat
http://voguepatterns.mccall.com/v834...hp?page_id=265
http://www.simplicity.com/p-5380-mis...ite-coats.aspx

Here’ a close up of the overcoat collar.
The sash looks just like a long rectangle, kind of a purplish-gray color. Nothing special about that…

Shoes— oh, boy. This one’s a pain... I searched the internet for thigh high boots that didn’t have extremely high heels. Couldn’t find any. If you find some, or happen to know a tidbit about the boots, then post it! We Undertaker cosplayers will love you. As for me, I found boots that stopped below the knee. The height of the heel and the material of the boot are perfect, but the length isn’t long enough. What I did was make thigh high spats. Here are a couple tutorials, in case you end up making spats yourself:
http://theindigophial.blogspot.com/2...-tutorial.html
http://steamfashion.livejournal.com/525310.html
http://www.craftster.org/forum/index.php?topic=230540.0
http://www.threadbanger.com/episode/THR_20090603
I think last I counted there were about 9 buckles going up the boot. There seems to be some kind of weird patch-thingy below the knee, or right on the knee. I’ll post a picture when I finish mine.
Another thing I thought of besides the spats: wear leggings underneath the boots. When you put on the buckles, place one of them over the edge of the boot to conceal the place where the boot ends and the legging begins. Of course, you wouldn't have to go that far if you intend on keeping the coat on. The coat is ankle length...

Hat—for some reason, I find that the hat is quite easy to accomplish. At least more so than the rest of the costume. You can find various tutorials for top-hats, but a lot of them are for mini top-hats. I found this tutorial that I like. It’s from Chioky. You might recognize the name for the wooden BLEACH Katana tutorials. It’s certainly one of the better hat tutorials I’ve seen. His hat is really tall, but you can change it to the length that you want:
http://chioky.deviantart.com/art/The...rial-103451650
Luckily, I was able to purchase my hat at a party store. You might be able to find them at Halloween stores as well.

If you have any other hat tutorials you really like, then tell me. I’ll post it here.

Now, to get that stretchy effect, take some stretchy fabric, like jersey, and measure a rectangle. The width= height of hat and length= circumference of hat. Do NOT add seam allowances. Now flip that hat upside down and trace around the top of it. Sounds confusing, but I'll post pictures someday. Cut out that piece, and the cut a smaller oval within it. Now cut two really thin rectangles (this is the tail part). Then put it all together! Turn it all inside-out and place it over the hat. Viola!

Now for the minor details:
Scars—get some Rigid Collodion and bring it all the way up from the right cheek to above the left eye. If you use other methods of applying scars, by all means, go right ahead. There is also a scar on his left pinky, like a ring of its own. Notice that there’s also a scar like a choker around his neck. Warning—watch out for if you have a latex allergy!!! If you do happen to have a latex allergy, use black kohl eyeliner and then blend it in your skin with a small make-up brush.
Cookies—much of the time, you’ll see Undertaker with doggie bone cookies in a mini-cauldron. Enough said. Cookies and cookie-cutter: Wal-Mart. Mini Cauldron: Also Wal-mart, or when it’s out of season, Halloween store.
Jewelry—I've created a new post on the Memorial Pendants:

http://www.cosplay.com/showthread.ph...13#post4269313

Someone asked about the ring on his forefinger. Here is what I replied with:I failed to get a close up of the rings, so here they are. I'll be sure to edit my post.

http://www.google.com/imgres?q=hair+...F6fTFAQ&zoom=1
http://www.google.com/imgres?q=hair+...F6fTFAQ&zoom=1

http://www.google.com/imgres?q=hair+...F6fTFAQ&zoom=1

Bead necklace—the name kind of says it all. Some of the pictures have aqua-colored beads. Others are shiny black. I just use my black pearls.
Nails—get them fake at a costume store. Or you could grow your nails out and paint them black (I don’t recommend the second).

Well, that’s it for the basic version of Undertaker. I’m going to leave space for 3 other versions of him.

Till then...
~eihihihih~

Time for some editing. Cosplay.com recently got a new line of wigs, I saw this one:
http://shop.cosplay.com/superlong-layered.html
Does anyone agree that with the right color a little cutting here and there on the bangs, it would make a suitable Undertaker wig?

Any questions or comments are welcome. Thanks!

~Crazy.

Let's move on to a similar version of Undertaker:

Woah! Undertaker is really handsome!!! (Fangirls may now squeal with delight!)
Here are some more pictures:

We've only been introduced to this new look of Undertaker, but some have already cosplayed this "new" version!
link: http://www.cosplay.com/costume/402682/

Hair: We are now able to see his eyes, which are green (as you can see in the color picture). With your pre-existing wig, you could probably re-style it.

Boots: There are some good shots of what his boots look like all the way up to his thigh! However, I can't tell if the boots are a soft fabric or a shiny, vinyl-like fabric.

Shirt: It is the same as the first version, but more noticable

Overcoat: The over coat is open, now, and the sleeves are pushed up to the elbows. Now the overcoat has striking similarity to Snape's own overcoat. Hmm....

Hat: Wait... where's his hat?

Jewelry: I'd seen (in various shots) that Undertaker wears a lot of earrings, including a bar in his right (?) ear. Now, I don't know about you, but I'm not gonna go out and spend hundreds of dollars so I can have the same amount of earrings as Undertaker. But for those of you who are die-hard Undertaker fans, be my guest!
The memorial pendants that were around his waist now hang over his left shoulder. For me, this adds to the mystery as to how they are attached to the costume, or if it really was like a belt.

Props: Sotoba and his very own death-scythe. For the Sotoba-- http://www.cosplay.com/showthread.php?t=249749
I've seen one really good Undertaker Death Scythe-- http://browse.deviantart.com/?q=unde...et=72#/d4fndf2
(Which, by the way, was made out of papier mache and cardboard!)

NEW: For those of you who have read the most latest chapter of Kuroshitsuji, we find that Undertaker considers the memorial pendants as his "treasure". Hmm... interesting. Very interesting... We also get to see a close-up of not just one, but two of the pendants!

Up next: Undertaker from his Shinigami days...

Now for the Next version: Shinigami.
http://s1177.photobucket.com/albums/...ent=421476.jpg
Wow! Is he handsome or what?! Here are some pictures from the anime:
http://s1177.photobucket.com/albums/...2163552780.jpg
http://s1177.photobucket.com/albums/...ker_Statue.png
Hair: Of course, the wig is the same, except his eyes are hidden by glasses.

Glasses: Okay. This one is really tough (for me anyway). Undertaker is wearing half-rimmed glasses. Now, I have perfect vision, and therefore I have no need for glasses (or contacts for that matter), and I find that it's really difficult to stumble upon glasses where the rim is on the bottom half of the eye-glass. Here are some ref pictures to show you what they look like:

http://danielcullen.blogspot.com/201...g-glasses.html
http://www.alibaba.com/product-gs/33...es_GR0130.html
http://www.alibaba.com/product-gs/34...s_with_PC.html
http://en.onccc.com/productDetail/ENG/146112.html
As for me, I've seriously considered getting rectangular-shaped silver glasses from the dollar store and somehow prying off the top half of the rim. I haven't done this, so I don't even know if it would work. If anyone has any suggestions, please let me know!

Shoes: Where are his cool boots? Well, in this version, Undertaker is wearing greyish black business shoes. BORING. But, oh well.

Jacket:Undertaker is now wearing a sharp-looking knee length Pea Coat. There are patterns for this, and you could probably use the same patterns suggested for Undertakers original over-coat:
http://www.burdastyle.com/patterns/1...sted-wool-coat
http://voguepatterns.mccall.com/v834...hp?page_id=265
http://www.simplicity.com/p-5380-mis...ite-coats.aspx
Of course, you'll have to modify the collar. If you want it to stick up like that, then definitely put in a strong interfacing. There are four buttons up one sleeve, and a total of twelve buttons on the front.
Shirt: We don't really get a look of whats under the jacket, but you can see a button down shirt. I would suggest you get one with a wing collar, like this:
http://www.ebay.com/itm/Mens-Wing-Co...ht_2449wt_1037
Iron the collar to where it sticks up, like it is shown on Undertaker. If there really is a certain style of shirt like Undertaker's, please tell me! Of course, he is wearing a simple looking greyish-black tie.

Pants: Business pants, which is the same color as everything else he's wearing.

Gloves: Notice that Undertaker is wearing black gloves. I'm guessing leather would be the best.

Death Scythe: It is the same as I mentioned in the above post.

Well, everyone, have fun with this version! Up next is the MAD HATTER version, with a side of gangster and cashier!!! See you then!

Uhh...I've got no pictures this time, but I felt like I needed to talk about the Mad Hatter version. Maybe it's hitsuzen...

It's time for the MAD HATTER!!!
Hair: It's no different, but I would like to point out that the braid is only on ONE SIDE. Why do cosplayers feel the need to add another braid on the other side?!

Jacket: For the patter, I suggest this:
simplicity 2333
Of course, the pattern isn't dead on, but it's close enough. If you look at one of the pictures, you can see the seam lines and pleats in the back! A big help, if you ask me! Do you see the cuffs, collar wings, and pocket flaps? To get those black stripes to look all jagged, I would get gray fabric and paint on the black stripes with fabric paint. You should probably do that BEFORE you cut out the pattern. A note about the collar: The black stripe/gray is part of the lining, but notice that the lining itself has NO black stripes.

Vest: You can see the color for yourself. Five buttons. Pattern (I'll post again, I promise!)

Pants: ...Every time I see them, I'm reminded of a pirate. Good luck with the fabric. I would recommend searching the stores around Halloween time. The stripes are about two fingers width, if you're unsure. Suggested pattern: None at the moment. Oddly enough, I've searched and searched for this type of pant style, and with no results. If any of you have and idea, please!

Shoes: Remember the whole-- 'you don't really need thigh-length boots, just get knee-length'? Well, take a good look, folks, cause his boots are now...You guessed it: knee-length. Yay, for saving money!!! I counted four buckles each on the boots this time.

Hat: take the tail off the hat for this version! The sash is the same color as the vest. On th ehat there is a slip of paper that reads 10/6. Does anyone know what that means? Please tell me! The thing sticking out of the paper looks like a fork, but I'm pretty sure it's a hat pin. google it.

Jewelry: It's all the same except that instead of necklaces, he's wearing a bowtie (which is the same color as the vest). If I were you, I'd make the skull out of clay, but you could probably find a skull brooch somewhere.

I'm sorry this version guide looks so terrible, but I'm in a bit of a hurry today. I'll clean it up in the near future!

Thanks ever so much. This is really useful. I'm re-doing the main version so your guide has been useful. I hope to be working on the reaper version very soon so I look forward to when you add that section.

I've tried to stick to fabrics that would be right for the era so for his boots I wouldn't go for anything the was very obviously pvc or too shiny. Currently, I have little lace up leather boots which I'll be adding long boot covers over the top in leather as I'm struggling to find the right boots. If anyone does find them please do add, thanks.

Undertaker's earring piercings

The bar across the ear is called an Industrial Piercing... Just a warning for those who think it'll be simple to get: It's not something you can so casually go and do and expect to heal like a lobe piercing. Expect a very LONG recovery time and sleeping on your back (or a special hollow pillow) and everyday cleaning if you don't want to have it shift or infected. Google "industrial piercing" and you'll see what I mean. But if one does want to get it, please go to a reputable piercing studio, not your Claire's or Icing with their earring gun. This is a piercing that needs a professional. I also don't recommend doing it so close to a convention or event where you have to move the earring. If you work in very strict dress codes, there might be issues. There are no "invisible retainers" for an industrial, and letting the holes heal separately can cause some alignment issues. Again, just do some research on healing and proper care: you'll be very glad you did!

I had to change some personal habits, tie up my hair and pin back my bangs to free the space around the ears during the duration of the healing process. This was in order to stop the subconscious habit of brushing my hair back behind the ears. This is one of the easy ways to infect your fresh piercing, especially while you're working!

Back onto the topic of Undertaker, This is a great reference: it would have been nice when I first started research on Undertaker's clothes...

I'll be wearing Undertaker for some future conventions; (Mad Hatter 50% complete) and it would be very neat if we could have a "creep-fest picnic" somewhere... anyone game for that idea?

Thank you for the info on the industrial piercings! I've heard of the body rejecting piercings. I've seen it, it happened to my co-worker. Strange...
"creep-fest picnic" haha! Sounds fun!

Lol, i keep looking at all these different "Undertaker "______" ". whatever posts and i can't help but feel like we need to just combine all those trends and everything into this trend this is like a must see for people gonna cosplay the undertaker. ( plus if this is not a sticky trend yet it needs to be for sure made into one.

P.S, the idea of a creep-fest picnic, sounds freaking awesome ^^ i think it would be pretty cool to have one, and not just that but imagine all the fun you could have with all the different characters not just undertaker, but anyways that's all for now i guess...

I'm not sure about making this thread 'sticky'. I thought the admins took care of that? It's a good idea, though.
There was a thread concerning the ring that Undertaker wears and I addressed it on this thread.
Also, I have a link to the other one I made: http://www.cosplay.com/showthread.php?t=273196
Two reasons for that-- 1.) I ran out of room and 2.) the memorial pendants (in my opinion) are the most difficult to handle as far as purchasing/making goes.

First of all, thank you sooo much for this. I decided pretty much out of nowhere to cosplay Undertaker and this is nothing less than a lifesaver when trying to find versions of him to cosplay. (I'm thankful that I was a damned idiot a couple of years ago and got a coat that's too big for me at a thrift store, though: That coat ended up being perfect for Undertaker's cloak!)
Though,

No, it is indeed a fork stuck in his hat. If you're a minitokyo user and you zoom into max on his Mad Hatter reference picture, this, you can see the prongs of the fork.
