Would cheap or expensive fabric be good for this character?

This is Ja'far from Magi, he's the king's adviser I think (I forgot if they gave him an actual title, I haven't read it in a couple weeks). Because of his high status I was thinking that I should probably use some sort of more expensive fabric (for his tan outer robe), but it's the same color as unbleached muslin so I was thinking to save money that it would be better just to use that. They live in a desert, by the way. I'm sort of clueless as to what to use.

You know, sometimes the cheaper fabric is just fine for projects. I've spent a lot of money and a little money on fabrics and had good outcomes either way. If the fabric suits your needs and doesn't cost you a lot, go for it. I will just say with muslin, it's pretty thin, so you might want to double it up depending on the weight of the type you found. And make sure you either finish your edges or do French seams because muslin can fray something terrible if you aren't careful.

You've asked the wrong question. The right question is : how low a quality fabric can I get away with on this costume?

Cheap and expensive refer only to price. I've bought poor quality fabric on line for way too much money (and no I never went back to that source again). I've gotten huge quantities of very high quality fabric second hand for mere pennies on the dollar of it's value. The 'cheap' fabric in this case being significantly higher quality.

Put your money where it will be seen most. You can scrimp on the parts where only a few inches will actually show. I actually bought one yard of a Liberty cotton print to go with a 1800's era french costume. i used it as a feature down the bodice, on the sleeves & front details. the rest was very inexpensive cotton twill, but placing the fancy fabric where it was most eye catching paid off when graded.
