For my first ever cosplay I did Hatsune Miku - the magnet version and my friend was Luka.
when I went off to the con I said "Well I'm off to be a robot lesbian with katie(my friend)" and my mom just said "have fun, take pictures". Needless to say my mother is pretty cool with cosplay (she's a seamstress and likes to help me make costumes)

The morning of AB 2012, before I left my house:

Mom: "So, who is the girl you're cosplaying as?"
Me: "I'm cosplaying a guy mom, remember?"
Mom: "...what kind of self-respecting man would wear that?!"

Also, my parents seem to enjoy trying on my wigs if I leave them lying around for too long... Neither of them can seem to quite grasp the concept, and almost always put the wig on backwards...

I was making my Sayaka Miki sword, and my dad and I had this conversation:

Dad: Look, my daughter's making her first sword. How cute.
Me: Well, I'm not sure if I would call it cute.
Dad: You're right, it's actually quite disturbing.

XD Oh my.

Me: "If I don't get duct tape on the couch, can I make my creepy german necromancer scythe out here?"
Mom: "...Just don't get duct tape on the new couch.
Me: "Yay! Can I tell you about him?"
Mom: "Really, I'm good. I don't need to hear anymore."
Me: "But he's cool! He has a dog! A skeleton dog that carries his scythe in its mouth, it's like the dog from the corpse bride!"
Mom: "...let's just watch cooking shows, shall we?"

I was making my scythe-thing for Faust VIII and my mom was a little freaked out and kinda sick of hearing me talk about him . Don't get me wrong, she's supportive of everything, but she does get sick of it.

My local jo ann fabrics is moving so they had all their sewing patterns $1.99. And I bought about 11 patterns I could use for cosplay. And I recently had trouble making gloves for my miss Martian cosplay. I tried making my own pattern but it didn't work out. And I was showing my Mom and Aunt all my patterns,
Me: This one is for Esmeralda from The hunchback of Notre dame, this one is for a sailor moon one, this one is for a goli dress,..." And so on. Eventually I get to the gloves and I'm like.
Me:"And I got a glove pattern."
Mom and Aunt: Thank God!!!

Whenever I would go wig shopping in a local costume shop or wig shop, my mom would pick out wigs that wee way too short or a wrong shade for the character I was cosplaying. I would keep telling her they're too short or the wrong color, and she would say "No they're not." e_e

Also, she says I don't need to cut or style them >.>
Yes I doo >.>
I swear, she doesn't trust me with scissors, let alone cutting wigs XD (Though I've done it before and it' turned out fine.)

Today while on the phone with my dad:

Dad: do you have your stuff all ready?
Me: yup! I just have to grab Yujinn off the wig head and get his wet shoes from the hallway
Dad: ...ok whatever
Friend: *chimes in* awww that's not nice!

I forgot my dad hates when I use people names to refer to my wigs.

Me: Mommy look! I'm a fish princess!
Mom: Looks good!

Sorry I was just, not used to that kind of reaction. Haha.
Though my dad flips tables when I crossplay and I doubt that's fair.

When I was working on Newsboy Ciel the first thing I made was the eyepatch. In this version the eyepatch has two straps. I left it on the table and my mom found it and said "What is this? Do I even want to know what it is?" I told her it was an eyepatch and she said, "Oh, I thought it was a G-string."

When I just completed Pikachu and was trying it on, I had my mom help me attach the tail. I pin it at both the bottom and top so it sticks up. She asked "Aren't you attaching it really high?" She thought the top part of the tail was the base. I tried to explain that Pikachu holds his tail up but she still didn't get it.

My parents almost never say anything about it, which I find a bit depressing since I keep thinking "They have nothing nice to say so they aren't saying anything at all". QQ

I suppose in a way that's a good thing since I've heard horror stories of of mean parents, but since I started cosplaying long after I graduated H.S. they probably just don't care one way or the other (*probably*) which is fine. They have never seen me dressed up in person as any of my cosplays outside of Halloween though, and that's going to change this year, so I am hoping that the experience ends up more amusing than traumatic. I'm not expecting any trouble though, they are usually pretty laid back and I'll be 30 in a few years so not much they can do about it anyway.

I showed a picture of the guy I was cosplaying to my dad and he said "He's a lot uglier than you are."

My mom's response to me wanting to cosplay Sweeney (this was when I first started out)

Me: So, I'm going to NYCC. Gonna cosplay Sweeney Todd.
Mom: Why did you have to choose Sweeney. Do you really have to dress as a middle aged murderer? Why couldn't you have chosen a different character, like that pirate guy Johnny Depp played a while back?

And I'm thinking... ok, so you don't want me to be the best barber in London, you'd rather have me run around dressed as a manipulative man who is always drunk? Alright then. Whatever.

More recently, I went to a friend's house to pick them up and her mom sees me

Friend's parent: Oh, you look so real!
Me: Uhh... thanks?
Friend: She means you look like the real thing
Me: Ohhhhh, well, thank you very much!

My parents found the hobby childish. I can see where they are coming form since they are from a traditional Chinese family. But it is something I like doing and it was fun, so over time, they accepted it and my mom taught me how to sew.
