Labyrinth Dance?
I'm doing a skit for a con coming up using costumes from the David Bowie movie Labyrinth. To pin point things more me and my friend are doing the outfits from the dream/ballroom scene.
Here's a link for those that don't know about the movie. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VppuD...ure=plpp_video I was wondering if doing a ballroom dance to the song in the clip would be an okay skit? It would show all of the costumes. I'm just wondering what others think. |

UNPOPULAR OPINION ALERT
It's not really a skit... if you're just dancing ballroom around a stage. And a ballroom number, especially a waltz (which is the dance they're doing) is going to be very hard to attract attention/not bore people unless it's a REALLY spectacular waltz, like... lifts and stuff and So You Think You Can Dance quality choreography. If you plan on doing some kind of dramatic scene WITH the dancing, it might be able to work. But remember that dances are not skits and it might not do as well as the actual skits. And got nothing against dancing, I am a dancer, but the thing about a dance working in this situation is it needs to be well choreographed and it has to tell a story which is hard for waltzes.

Haha I felt it was a good warning to put up, another point I'd like to make is if you're doing the outfits in that scene, doing ANY kind of ballroom moves (going to the floor, lifts, etcetc) is going to be damn difficult and ill advised with Sarah's gigantic ballgown.

I would enjoy it-- if it was SHORT.
It's a great way to show off all angles of the costume!

If you have Jareth and Sarah and some other dancers, try recreating the moment when the two leads meet up and start dancing. That gives you some dance choreography, to show off the costumes, and some storytelling to engage the audience.

I've rarely seen waltzing skits that work very well. It actually hides a bit of both costumes, and, staging wise, it's less interesting when there's a big stage, and the only two people on it are standing so close together.
A musical/dancing skit would be fine, but I'd definitely look to tell a story. The sequence itself has a story, or even the characters' dynamic through the whole film could be played out to music. It's a popular and well-known pair of characters, and their relationship has enough drama and tension to it to make a very good skit. I'd probably start by looking for a music track that inspires you; something that tells a story to you (not necessarily with lyrics; even instrumental ones accomplish this), and trim that to tell the story as concisely as you can (well within your convention's time limit). I tend to find that a good music track does a lot of the work for me, and from there it gets easier to visualize the skit I want to do.

Just a quick inspiration here: given their relationship, it would be interesting to see a waltz turned into a sort of cat-and-mouse game between them. Try doing the waltz from one side of the stage to the other without actually touching. That way the waltz results from her attempts to escape with him constantly blocking her way. It's tricky and you'll have to rehearse A LOT, but if done right it I think it could provide the context you're looking for here.

LABRYITH. YESSSSSS. *humming in her mind "you remind of the babe" "what babe" "The babe with the power?" "what power" "the power of voodoo"*
ANYWAY. Yeah, I'd edge away from a waltz...if you plan it where you're standing apart for a bit, it could work though. The song is a little slow, I wouldn't recognize it out of time. You could take a different scene and put them in theballroom costumes there, like the end scene. Or you could even write a bit of your own awesomeness.

You could start off with a waltz, then have the music change: let's say you start with the actual ballroom music from the film, then switch to 'Dance Magic Dance'
