Ways to wear a clip-on pony?

I purchased a clip-on ponytail extension from Arda for my Aerith/FF7 cosplay, as I'll be using my real bangs in front. My natural hair is very long, but not nearly long or thick enough for her massive braid. Here is a reference pic:

My first problem is clipping the pony on. How should I cover my natural hair? Styling my hair into a bun did not work. I also tried removing the clip and simply tucking the extension into my own ponytail.... Waaaaay too heavy!

Can I somehow disassemble the pony into separate wefts and make my own hair extensions from those? Or should i just stick with the clip? Any help or advice would be greatly appreciated, thank you!

Most ponytail has elatic feeding through the netting to pulling it tight around the clip. Just remove it and the clip and then you have just the wefs on the netting.
