I'd recommend Steins;Gate. I just watched it and it was awesome. I'm not really sure how much "action" it has, but it was definitely epic and kinda sad at some points D:

I also suggest Tiger & Bunny! And you can never go wrong with Death Note. My second favorite series (next to Madoka Magica) is Naoki Urasawa's MONSTER, which you can watch on Hulu. I recommend watching it, it's REALLY awesome! It's completely realistic, though- no magic of any sort. But that's one of the things I like about it. I don't recommend the English dub, though- the English one is kinda bad...

Ghost in the Shell: Stand Alone Complex is good if you want action (particularly if you're a sci-fi/cyberpunk fan). I'd also recommend Soul Eater (although it starts going downhill when it diverges from the manga).

I finished Ergo Proxy, that was a superbly made anime. The humor, animation, plot, mood, and everything else fit extremely well together. I'd say it definitely rates up there with Ghost in the Shell! :-) In my opinion at least.

I'm now watching Code Geass and it's pretty good so far as well. I'm on the first episode right now.

::Edit:: Yesh, Code Geass is brutal...but then I suppose most of the other anime's I watched are as well. ;-p

::2nd Edit:: Crud!!!! This show is extremely fast past and exciting!! Although I don't know anything about Chess, I like how they incorporated that and strategy into the framework of the show.

On a more topic related note, the first few episodes of Code Geass were awesome, however now I'm noticing that the main character has let his new power go to his head. As he's becoming rather arrogant and cocky. I'm starting to hope someone knocks him down a few pegs so that he comes back to Earth some. But that's just me.

If you do not mind some..well a lot of blood and violence and a good bit of nudity (but not a whole lot of sexuality) I would recommend watching Elfen Lied. Besides the previously stated elements, it has a good mix of drama, suspense, action and all that...

If you want a good psychological anime, something that'll mess with your head a little... I recommend School Days. It starts off rather slow but turns interesting real quick.

So long as there is a point to the blood and violence in the anime, I don't mind. The type of movies that show excessive amounts of blood, gore, and violence just for shock value...that turns my stomach. But when it is balanced within the plot and there is a reason for what ever is happening in the scene then it's not so bad.

For instance Full Metal and Ergo Proxy tended to have a lot of gore and violence, but it was during plot scenes where the drama, suspense, and the mood itself called for it. Essentially balancing everything out.

Also thank you for the recommendation of Elfen Lied.

Right now I'm watching Code Geass, which is pretty good. Though the characters seem to occasionally be rather moody and melodramatic. Which isn't a bad thing, but all the colors in the show are usually very bright and almost cheerful. Which makes the dark and dramatic moods of the characters, seem a bit odd.

I was merely just curious as to seeing whether or not my recommendations were worth it. I'm sure you being the OP and all will probably decide that on your own though.

Getting a little tired of Code Geass, I'm on the 15 episode and it seems to becoming far more of a soap opera then a suspenseful, action-filled, drama. Going to switch to a different anime for awhile then maybe come back to Code Geass.
