Well, it depends, for L, it's pretty easy, just need a long sleeve white shirt and simple blue jeans, but he is about 95% barefoot, if you are okay going barefoot at cons, then L.

For Light, you'll need a black or white long sleeve collared shirt, red tie, black jeans and shoes. If you aren't okay going barefoot for L, then Light would be best. I too am cosplaying Light, I'll have a black long sleeve collared shirt instead of white. Plus you'll carry around the Death Note and a pen, which is what will I do.

Are we discussing character wise, or cosplay wise?
Because L is fun to cosplay, while Light is just awkward because you're trying to be all dramatic, yet people come up to you and are all "can I sign your Death Note?"
Character wise, I think L's quirks make him a wonderful character, and he is a lot of comic relief on an otherwise overly dramatic anime. On the other hand, L is a lot stupider than he made himself out to be. Light was intellegent, smart, and godly at the same time. L is just kinda cute. Matters what you like better in a character.

I read the manga first and prefer it. You get to see so much more of the intense intellectual battle between the two characters, and I liked that. I never imagined that a story like this would keep me on the edge of my seat, but it did ! All the way through.

Choosing sides is difficult. I loved and related to both characters in some way. I believe Light didn't start out evil, but became possessed by the the power he was given. However, even when he DID become evil I found myself loving and hating him all at once ! L is eccentric, intelligent, adorable, and even despite what happens to him... he is the victor in the end, if only through his successors.

I honestly was cheering for them both all the way through, and was sad whenever I saw one of them fail. I don't think I've ever felt that way about a "bad guy" vs a "good guy" before.

If we are talking about cosplay wise then it depends. If you want to do an easy cosplay then go for L. If you want to go for a cosplay that is slightly more difficult then go for Light. In my opinion you should cosplay the character you like more.

Character wise I watched half of the anime and both of the live action movies (never got around to watching "L change the world") and from what I saw from those I honestly liked L more. I dont hate Light I actually liked him at first but after awhile L just grew on me more.

I enjoyed both characters in the series, but Light has always been my favorite. I've always had a thing for antiheroes, and he has always stood out to me as an interesting "bad guy".

I think I like them equally. L was awesome, and there was something so unique about Light... he was definitely evil and just about unredeemable by the end of the series, but I still couldn't help but root for him right up to the end even if I didn't want to, and found his death just as genuinely sad as L's.
