Hey all. I've not usually been one for making things, but have felt left-out lately by friends who do, and I thought maybe people out here on the internet would provide better instruction for a beginner than they've been able to (instruction by friends has so far consisted of "get a bunch of materials for what you need to make and just throw them together". It's supposedly very simple, but gives me little idea of what to actually do.)

If they can make stuff that looks like it costs hundreds of dollars despite them being on the same low budget as me, then my hope is that I might be able to learn to make decent stuff as well, and that maybe I won't feel quite so left out next time someone does a convention/costume party/Halloween. I just don't really know where to start.

Sounds like your friends aren't being very helpful. It is definitely not as simple as "gathering random stuff and throwing it together". It takes a bit more than that, but after looking through a few threads on here and posting some questions, you will definitely have the knowledge needed to get started

I'm not sure exaclty yet.

I was thinking of perhaps Dawn/Hikari of Pokemon as what appears to be a semi-easy place to start.

Riven, or League of Legends was another that I'd consider a really cool cosplay. She has a small amount of armor though, and that sword, which I think are kind of out of my league (no pun intended).

Well if you aren't totally set on making 100% of the costume yourself, I'm sure one of the commissioners on here would be happy to commission that sword for you
