Lightening a Black Coat?

I'm sorry if there is a thread somewhere like this. I looked, but I may have missed.

I have a coat that is perfect for a costume I want to do, however, it's black, and I need it to be a dark brown/greyish. The coat is supposed to look pretty worn out. Is it possible to lighten this coat by bleaching or another method?

Thanks

You can try bleach or some kind of color remover. There are several options available on dharmatrading.com . The results you get will also depend on the fiber content of the coat. Naturals always play better than polyesters.

There's no guarantee that the coat will fade to the color you want - it depends on what pigments were in the black that was used to color the fabric in the first place. So, you may need to overdye the coat if it doesn't discharge to the shade you want.

If you can cut a swatch out of an inside spot where it won't harm the coat, I definitely recommend testing first.

I am okay with redying the coat. I just want to get it lighter so I can.
I'm afraid of the "tye-dye" effect, and that is shows up incredibly spotty.
