Need help wiring LED rope to battery

I'm making Uriel from Darksiders, and I want the wings to be able to glow.
picture here

I am familiar with LED lights, I can make simple series circuits, but I have a rope light that I'd like to use as I'm going to need a lot of LEDs, and I need wire it to a battery instead of to a wall, and I'm hesitant as to how to make it without killing either the battery or the lights.

The specifications of the rope light:
90 lights x 0.04w (and can be extended to 240lights, which I'm probably going to have to do)
The transformer is IP44, with 24V DC/10VA.

Is there a way to attach it to a battery safely, or should I look for other options?

So long as you follow the specs then it'll be fine.

But then I'd question are you keeping the transformer onto the string of LEDs or not. Essentially a transformer is used to safely convert the house voltage of 120V into the string to a lower current so that you don't end up burning it out.

All you really need is a battery and a switch. If you're not sure on the level of voltage you need start with a 9V and go up until it turns on. But if your transformer converts 24V then supposedly that's the voltage you'll need to go too.

But if you remove the transformer then some minor math and wire configuration is going to be needed to determine the level of voltage you're going to need to turn it on.

Of course this is just my thoughts as I suggest getting a second opinion on my diagnostics of the problem.

I hope this helped.

Just go with the jump pack, save you a lot of heart ache, blown ropes and time

You just need 24V to power your lights. No crazy math. You can get it with 16 AAA batteries if you want, 4 6V lantern batteries, 2 12V batteries, whatever. You can also get a little device to step up the voltage from one voltage to another. Or you can run the LED's at lower voltage- they'll probably light up, just not nearly as bright.

90 lights is coming in at 3.6W, so I would probably go with the 16xAAA batteries- you can hide 4 of the 4-packs you get at radio shack pretty easily inside a costume, and as long as you get good batteries you will get some decent life. Duracells have about 1000mAh, so you'd get (gradually fading) light for about 6 hours. (3.6W/24V=0.15A=150mA, 1000mAh/150mA=6.67 hours)

Does that make sense?

And be sure to keep track of polarity, they won't light up at all if you get the polarity backwards....

That makes sense! It's what I thought I would need, but I wanted to be sure so I wouldn't have to redo it all.

Thanks a lot!

No prob. Be careful with the rope light if you plan to cut it. Usually there are only specific points where it can be cut safely.

And post pictures when you're done!

I'm connecting the battery to a cable that plugs into the rope light, so that I won't have to buy new LEDs if I mess up.

I'll try to remember to post pictures!

Just wanted to say that I managed to connect it to the batteries! Okay it wasn't that hard, but I've always dreamt of a cosplay with lights or moving parts.

I'll upload some pictures tomorrow!
