The basis of word-of-mouth is generally finding good people, not so much avoiding bad ones. With word of mouth you find people you know, friends of friends, people who friends can vouch for, and so on. If you rely on word of mouth, you are not going to do a photoshoot with someone that nobody knows, recognizes, or can vouch for in the first place.

Yup, word of mouth helped me quite a bit. I rarely even go to cosplay.com nowadays to get photoshoot requests since my slots fill up so fast before a California anime or comic convention starts.

On the other hand, once I start doing other cons like Otakon, Sakura-con, and A-Kon I will probably need to reach out to cosplay.com and other venues since I do not have an extensive cosplay network out of the west coast.
