Anyone else not care about the "rules"

Hey there! I've known about Lolita for about 6 years now but only THIS YEAR have I actually been wearing it. Before I ordered a single thing I did some fun research, read the very cute guidebook on livejournal, and I currently follow some confession blogs on tumblr. It's all good fun and very helpful! Considering I sometimes Google the most random things like, "how do I wash my lolita clothes?"

So yeah, it's all pretty fun! Now I know most people into EGL (and no, I don't follow that on LJ. That website's just too...not my cup of tea.) I know a lot of people and blogs say, "don't buy cosplay items, or people will think it's more of a costume than actual clothing, like Chobits costumes and such."

I know, I knooow. But some of the outfits for those types of characters are just too cute! And I can't help myself. I've only bought from Bodyline so far (though with Christmas around the corner and my eye on a few Fanplusfriend stuff, that'll soon change) but just, some of the ebay cosplay pieces, even though many Lolitas look down on it (I said many, not all), I find waaay too adorable NOT to be interested in.

So, what do you think? NO HATE HERE. If you knew me in real life, trust me I buy anything that I find cute x_X

I think that's fine. Sometimes in our daily life we need to do something which can please ourself. I often buy some stuff that are not so useful, but I just want to buy it. And I like to buy the cheap things, like when some festivals are coming, there are many sales promotions and I like to take this kind of opportunity to buy something. Now I'm focusing on some websites. Here is the link. Maybe you can have a try also.

Hm....it's a very interesting topic. I have a feeling this will turn out redundant and I will try my best to not let it be but..here goes anyway.

One thing I will start off and say though is...with a lot of the costumes...the materials used make it look...well for lack of better terminology...costume-y.

I think...it wouldn't be as huge of a discussion point if they were made out of more practical materials like most of the typical lolita wear is. It's usually quite durable, can take a stain or two and handle being worn time and time again without falling apart or looking like you just pulled it out of a box. This isn't to mention a fairly high resale value. (With high quality cosplays this is true too, but I'm not going into that one) I know that a lot of lolitas put huge emphasis on brand and with brand...comes a hefty price tag. Is there anything wrong with Bodyline and FanPlusFriend? Of course not. There's just a line between what could be considered the "proper" lolita and costume.

Take lolita in anime for example.

Rozen Maiden, Pandora Hearts, Touhou Project, even Vocaloid and Hetalia have taken elements of lolita in a lot of their character designs. That's not even mentioning Chobits, Shaman King and even the Alice in Wonderland inspired animes such as Alice in the Country of Hearts. There's so many, it would be quite easy to take it and incorporate it into something that looks more like clothing and less like the costumes that the community has complained about so often.

There's absolutely nothing wrong with buying and wearing things that make you happy or that you find cute or what not. I see nothing wrong with wanting to incorporate some of the elements that you're talking about.
But...in my opinion, the "rules" were put in place so that the fashion would remain fashion and not turn into cosplay. There's a huge difference in walking down the street in a typical coordinated lolita set and that brand new shiny Chii cosplay.

I think the point I'm trying to make here is...if it's what you want to do...go for it.
You've just got to understand that there typically is a difference between the two and it's not a line that many lolitas ever like to see crossed.
Do I have a problem with it personally?
If it's done well; of course not. I take no issue or offense with it. I'm sure there's plenty of things that could work nicely. Would I ever do it myself? Probably not.

I'm sure everyone interprets this differently and I'm certainly no expert; I've only done a considerable amount of research on this and similar topics. I take no real sides here.

@TeaForThought, Nonono of course I know that, haha, don't worry. What I mean is while I do own some real Lolita pieces, I see nothing wrong with the people who buy some costumey outfits. I should have probably added that I think it's fine once in a while, just not on a regular basis. But yes, I know they're two different things. Even with "normal" clothes I NEVER care for brand - not many people in my school do to be honest, but maybe it's because I was raised that way? My mother doesn't mind brand, so as long as we like the quality of something and it feels comfortably it's good enough for us. Thanks for your input! That's all I've asked for is opinions and more opinions, so thanks!

No worries..I kind of assumed that but..I wasn't totally sure ^^"
I know I probably came off as a bit of an ass for a second there. I'm not one for brand either, though I can appreciate it when it comes my way. I just...I'm not so sure. A lot of the costumes have this hit or miss thing on quality and I'm one who tends to wear stuff until it's just not wearable anymore so I'd rather put the money on the stuff that lasts...you know what I mean?

You're not stupid. You just didn't know. And that's ok. I learned the hard way not to trust that when ebay says "uniform cotton" that it's not actualy "uniform cotton" lol Everyone needs to find things out somehow. Just lucky you, you didn't find out the hard way lol

Not 100% if it's a Milanoo storefront, but it's still pretty bad..

Yeah, haha, definitely. Like, for example, I'd rather spend money at the Disney Store than on McDonald's toys.

No kidding lol

Anyway, while I'm here, might as well get on topic huh..
I think the costume-y ones look cheap to be honest, but if you like the more costume looking ones, that's fine too, You shouldn't worry about what other's think of them if YOU like them..It may get looked down on, but so do A LOT of cosplays too..If you get a totally inacurrate cosplay, SOMEONE will say something. It won't be everyone, but there are those people, just like there are in te Lolita fashion. Don't worry about it

The problem with buying cosplay costumes to use as lolita, no matter how lolita they seem, is that they are just that- costumes. Lolita is a fashion that takes a lot of creativity to create a good, pretty look, and i think the general consensus is if you wear a cosplay costume, it takes away the originality that goes into a lolita look- instead, you are just wearing a character, The other issue is most bought cosplays, unless you spend as much money as it would cost to get brand secondhand, are made out of materials normally not suitable for lolita

That being said, I personally believe that people are free to wear whatever they choose, but it needs to be within the rules to be called lolita. The rules are here for a reason, to keep the fashion in line and look distinctive. Without the rules, someone could just throw on a frilly shirt and jeans and call it lolita. This applies to cosplay costumes as well, anyone with a bit of lace on their cosplay dress could just call it lolita without the rules in place.

If you really love a characters dress which looks like it has lolita elements, and i've been in this case as well, i just cosplay it, and don't call it lolita. :>

I second sailormoonfan here.

Lolita is not a fashion that allows for a lot of leeway in terms of not adhering to rules stated. I'm all for people wearing what they want. There are, however, terms like Lolita-inspired rather than being out and out Lolita. Lolita is a legit fashion, and cosplay is not a fashion. Cosplay is Costume Play.
