Just do whatever. Most people don't care. For example, I cosplayed Lum from Urusei Yatsura ( who is not black in tthe least) and I had people come up to me telling me they love my cosplay tons.

First and foremost cosplay whoever you want to. Second, have fun. That is all you need to do.

Ok, I'm starting to get ideas about my first cosplay to put together, but I'm a little worried because I'm black. I know there are lots of other black people who cosplay, but I'm not sure if I should cosplay as a black person in anime, or if I should go ahead and cosplay anyone. I just don't want to make a bad cosplay and be totally off. Any help?

Again, I'm not racist at all or anything like that. Just trying to find some help for my first cosplay. By they way, I'm 14 and a boy so you get the idea.
Cosplaying a non-black character does not make you racist. Wear whatever you want to wear and enjoy yourself.

The important thing to keep in mind is that you do not need to 'paint' your skin to try and match the color of the character you are cosplaying and it's inappropriate to do so.

Just enjoy your costume and your time at the convention and don't worry at all what anyone else has to say.

Wrong.

It doesn't matter at all even if they have a shitty costume made of garbage bags and rope. It's still okay.

Preach.

For the record, I've always wanted to see someone cosplay "Killa" and "King Chappa" from Dragon Ball Z.

For me, I want to portray a character's appearance accurately in a cosplay and part of that (again, for me) means choosing a character who fits my body-type and skin color (Plus, I'm not really very knowledgable about makeup artistry, so we eliminate a few variable from the creative process that way). You gotta do you tho.

Cosplay whoever you like, regardless of race. Anyone who says otherwise is an arrogant bitch who'd probably criticize you for anything else anyway.

avataraang17, I have actually had the opposite concern in the past - I'm whiter than a bedsheet, but my dream costume is Tia Dalma from POTC. I've decided that I'll just go for it, and if anyone comments about my race...well, I can't change that, so tough cookies.

But as others have said, your race doesn't matter when it comes to costuming. Heck, most anime characters are Asian, and many of us here are totally not. ^_^ Make a great costume and go have fun in it. That's really all that matters.

It depends on if you cosplay just to have or to make it look professional and accurate, say if you want to participate in a cosplay competition
