insulation foam sword

Alright, so I'm making a giant sword, obviously enough. It's Black Gold Saw's ( if anyone is curious ) and I'm trying to figure out what I can cover it in to give it a shiny, metallic look. With Insulation Foam, you can't spray paint it directly because it'll be eaten away ( learned from experience ) and I've recently come across PVC stretch vinyl. I had been thinking about covering it in that, but then the sharpened points would surely be rounded, right? I really don't want to paint in gesso or anything along those lines. Any suggestions?

Easy enough answer.

You can just cover with craft foam. Once you have it perfectly to the shape you want, coat it 15 to 20 times in a water/glue mix. This will seal the foam completely allowing you to paint it without it being absorbed.

After painting you'll need an acrylic polish which you can buy at a Walmart. It's in a floor cleaning section. After coating it once or twice, it'll give off a nice shine.

Then from there weather it by smudging the blade with black to give it a dull look. But especially to the edges and corners to make them more pronounce.

End result, it should look like this. http://s852.beta.photobucket.com/use...00757.jpg.html

Hope this helped.

Why wouldn't you want to use Gesso? That's what I use..Also you want it to look metalic right? That's what they make metallic paint for..

The sun actualy reflects so much off it that it almost feels like using a mirror toward the sun and making a reflection on someone..I don't really understant WHY you wouldn't want to use gessu....That just doesn't make sense to me

Of course you could use gesso and it works really good. Just simply for me the water glue mix is in the long run cheaper by comparison.

So I've been looking into the Fiberglass Resin and Cloth method, but I don't know much about handling it. I've found both of them for about 40$ in total at home depot and I know I would coat the insulation foam in it for a hardened coat, but I'd like to hear or see any opinions of others who've tried it?

If you do the fiberglass, please save yourself the hassle and get gesso..The water/glue mix works in place of gesso for painting, but to do that with fiberglass you will spend WAY too much time and money on glue..Gesso will be perfect for the resin.

**My neighbor knows a lot about fiberglass and that's where I learned all I know lol

The prop is waaay too big for the glue thing. I did that with armor last year and it required way too many coats, so the gesso is probably going to happen. I have plenty left over, any who.

Yea you should only need about 2 (maybe 3) coats of gesso then sand it then do one more and light sand and it should be ready for the fiberglass
