Your Thoughts on King of the Nerds...

(I am specifically talking about last night's episode since it was the only episode that I have ever seen. Be warned that there are many spoilers coming your way so if you haven't seen the episode I am sorry. I do not mean to spoil it for you. I shall warn you when the spoilers start).

My take on what King of The Nerds (KotN):
Basically what I understood of this show, they chose some socially awkward nerds that look like they cannot even dress themselves properly and I'm guessing that they have to complete challenges that are considered "nerd-esque" while being judged. Seems relatively harmless and like every other "reality shows" that wish to portray a certain demographic. I never really was interested in the show until I found out that the awesome cosplayer, Yaya Han would be on the episode. Clearly, I have much respect for her as a fellow cosplayer so naturally, I wanted to watch the episode.

*Spoilers start here*
Last night's episode summary:
The episode that I am talking about had the nerds dress up as original characters with costumes that they made and they had to complete a theme while roleplaying in their costumes. Yaya Han and George Takei and the Creator of Buffy the Vampire Slayer (Not sure if this is is right) were the judges. The nerds were made to act out a theme, and basically bring their character to life. They seemed to be judged based on character creativity/design, character believability and character portrayal.

*End of Spoilers for the most part*

Basically, this part was really what struck me odd. The nerds created their own costumes, own character designs with their own background story and when acting it just seemed like they didn't really care about what they were doing and they just seemed...annoyed? I mean I know they aren't real actors and some of them never acted before in front of others or on T.V, but it seemed extremely forced. Then to make matters worse, the judges basically pulled off a mini "I don't like your costume" bit in front of the nerds (not the exact words but close). If I wasn't cringing before cause of the acting, I was cringing now. Now I do not mind having people critique a cosplay (in fact I encourage it when it comes to my cosplays) however...this seemed over the top. The nerds were obviously not professional costume makers/cosplayers and the fact that they had a professional telling them that this isn't creative/this is creative just struck a nerve with me. I have to say, I was a bit...unnerved considering that no one should have to say "I don't like your costume" (not in these words per say) no matter how famous/awesome you are. I mean that is what pissed off the cosplay community many times before no? (I think the Rules of Cosplay that that girl posted just summed up everything cosplayers wouldn't follow).

This whole episode reminded me of the awkward kids trying to get in with the "cool kids."

Now it seems like to people who don't really know much about costuming/cosplayers, they would associate the people who actually cosplay with the bullshit that was just seen on t.v. I mean, this has happened before with other groups of people (Dance Moms, Honey Boo Boo, etc). This show just seems to exploit the nerds that no one wishes existed or they are creating a false pretense about nerds so society can just box all of us in.

Am I taking this episode too far? What are your thoughts about this? Any other episode of this show that has bothered you or ticked you off?

(Personally, I am never going to watch this show again. I am annoyed and disgusted by it.)

That's what reality shows do. They exploit people. I would have been surprised if this one had been any different. Some people are adept enough that they exploit right back. Others are naive and have no idea what they are letting themselves in for. None of it has anything to do with me or my hobbies.

Reality TV shows exploit, as The Hag said. It has no bearing on me, or what I do, and honestly I stopped watching those programs a long time ago. Unfortunately, people are easily influenced by the things they see and hear, and that's one reason why stereotypes exist. They look for the extremes and the shows edit to make it look as extreme as possible. Threads like these come up any type nerd culture or costuming is displayed on these shows and honestly it's the same old song and dance every time.

It seems to me that not all of the contestants are socially awkward. Granted, some are, but my opinion is that they made a point to pick the charismatic nerds who would look good on TV and made it seem like everyone classified as a nerd is just like this.

Honestly, the only reason I've continued to watch this show is because of Joshua (he was the assassin Shade during the cosplay competition) of the orange team. I discovered that he is a co-host on a YouTube channel that I'm a fan of (Jovenshire of Smosh Games), and he's a very likable guy both on the show and on the YouTube channel. Should he leave, I'll likely lose interest and mark the show as dead, then return to watching him online. He interviewed three of the other contestants (the guy with the elder god/demon cosplay and the pink-haired girl with the forest nymph cosplay), and they also seemed fairly likable (save the girl from the blue team with her "boot to the head" song).

I'm iffy about this show. It's a show about nerds competing with each other for the entertainment of a target audience that likely isn't full of other nerds. When I think of 'King of the Nerds' I think about the 'Festival of Fools' in the Hunchback of Notre Dame. It seems like they're doing all this stuff that is fun to them while unknowingly being mocked. But it is reality TV so I'm sure there's nothing real about it.

Today i learned: there are still some people that believe reality shows contain an element of reality.

Here's a brilliant clip by the brilliant Charlie Brooker about editing on "reality" TV shows.

I just watched the first episode with my mom.

When they picked the video game player girl my looked at me and asked where the background music was from. It was Portal. She doesn't play but she heard it enough this summer to recognize it.

My thoughts so far: meh. Virgil annoys the hell out of me.
And one guy is apparently a follower of the Drowned God, which makes me instantly distrust him.

I feel bad watching this show. Reason is that Alana is friend of my from college and from my hometown. Her brother and I graduated the same year. Still I want to know how she got on it. I watch a couple episode to rout for hear. Instead I feel sad for her and how it shows her and how so much out of her element she is. She is very nerdy but compare to all other contests she just average. With being average and everyone else having 1 very good specialty. They gaining up on her. Trying to get rid of her for being the weakest link of the team. Its just to personal for me.

Its not that I believe what I saw is true, but hell there are a lot (and I mean A LOT) of morons in the world that are gullible enough to believe such and since I am a cosplayer, I know that there will be people stupid enough to judge me and others based on this episode.

Sure, its okay not to care, but what if it gets too far?
(And I don't want to sound like a hipster here but...) Doesn't it seem that cosplaying/costuming is becoming mainstream but with a relatively bad light?

And I honestly did not know that this was brought up before in other shows. D: -shows how much she watches T.V-

This, it's like the virgin diaries or the nerd speed dating show... it's all intended to continue to get a few laughs at their expensive and exploit people...
