Contacts Questions

Hi, first time lens-wearer here.

I was just wondering, since this is my first time planning to order contacts..

How much does an eye exam cost, to find out if I can wear lenses? Also, some threads say that I need a doctor-prescribed prescription to purchase lenses, from say, PinkyParadise?

I don't wear glasses on a regular basis, only for when I need to see far away which is occasional. I've gotten an eye exam for glasses. Where I live teens my age can get free eye exams, do you think this could apply to the contacts-exam?

I'm really sorry if these questions are stupid. But I want to be safe when doing this. Thanks.

Well, let me try to help you here.

Do you have insurance? See, I got an eye exam a few weeks ago, but since I have insurance, I have an annual eye exam that comes free with the insurance policy.

Now, I don't need glasses either, but I went, and what my doctor told me was, if your eyesight isn't great, you NEED glasses before you can get contacts. Thankfully in my case, I didn't have to. She said my vision prescription was a -.50 after the eye exam, and after that, I brought up the idea of colored contacts, and she said I could do it, but with my insurance (again), it would be a 60 dollar co-pay to learn how to put them in and be okayed through her to order them. I did this, and there was no other exam. All the colored contact part was her showing me how to put them in, giving me two trial pairs, and some new solution and such, as well as prescription info from my eye exam.

So with this, my -.50 prescription from my eye exam is what I am looking for with colored contacts, or no prescription at all (That's what my trial pair is, no prescription).... you don't get a separate eye exam for colored contacts. I also haven't ordered any contacts YET...

So simply put:

- Find out your insurance plan on eye exams.
- If free, you are set, get the exam.
- After the exam (Or before), inform the doctor you are interested in colored contacts.
- After the exam, he/she will tell you if you are okay to do contacts with or without glasses.
- Thereafter, you need to pay roughly atleast 100 dollars if you want the doctor to okay you for contacts, DEPENDING on how your insurance covers. Mine covered like 40 dollars or so off of glasses OR contacts, and since I DIDN'T need glasses, I got my contact cost cut.

Hope this helps!

Reality: Recycled or no cosplay at all. Got to love commissioning! Thanks everyone!! Serious thanks to Dulcinea, who actually made the deadline for the accessories far in advance and of outstanding quality. Sucks they won't be used.

@ Larcenciel - If you don't mind me adding a few things, I'll help you out as a glasses wearer with really bad near-sightedness.

Another thing that can be done is if you go to your eye doctor for a regular eye check-up and/or exam, bring the issue of contact lenses up. My vision is so bad that I need to see an eye doctor regularly, but if you plan to go to your eye doctor for your regular check-up - assuming you do it regularly - bring up the subject during the visit.

If your eye doctor wants to perform tests then and there, and it won't cost extra, my advice is to endure the tests and if he/she says you can wear contacts or not - you may end up getting a call from your eye doctor saying he/she wants you to come into his/her office to discuss your results.

If your eye doctor's office has a receptionist who can look up the information on billing and such, contact him/her and ask the receptionist your question. It may sound stupid talking to a receptionist about this, but you'll only be a fool for 5 seconds and you will probably get a yes or no response.

I don't know if I've missed anything?
