Smile Help with fabric dye

I am planning to dress as Midna from Twilight Princess in May and I am having a little trouble with the body part of the costume. I am planning to buy a white long sleeved leotard from a dance store and using fabric dye to fill in the black parts because the dye will look more real than fabric paint and won't start to chip off. My problem is choosing the dye and how I would go about doing this cleanly. I have read that different fabrics need different dyes, but I am unfamiliar with any brands as this is my first costume that I am making.
Also, I have never used fabric dye before, so if anyone has any experience with using it in this way rather than for a full garment I need some help with that as well. How do I get it so there isn't run off into the white parts?

Thank you!

Here is a picture of what I want
