So,
I was looking through my house and I found this skirt:

and I thought "Hey! this could maybe work for school uniform Madoka!" Now the only problem is the skirt has the plaid stripes (yes I know they aren't totally accurate but I'm not a complete stickiler for details) buuut sadly its the wrong color it needs to be I'm thinking black as you can see here in this picture:

I'm not 100% sure on Madoka's skirt color it seems to look black but in some pictures its like a dark olive green. Anyways, for now lets just say I need it black with the white plaid stripes. How would I go about changing the color of it? is there some kind of fabric paint I could use? Or is is not possible?

what is the material of the skirt? it should say on one of the tags

depending on the material im thinking dye to black then paint the white stripes, its going to be super time consuming and theres a chance you wont get a pure black base... but itll be your only option

It says on the tag its 65% Polyester and 35% Rayon;

I don't think either of those will take much dye. I'd just buy the correct fabric and make a new skirt.

Aw dang really? Oh well atleast I asked about it before trying anything.

Might I suggest looking at school uniform skirts? Lands End sells one, on sale now for $25, in a pattern called "white plaid", that might be what you want. You may have to adjust the length, though.

If you wanna dye polyester then your best bet will always be disperse dye. You pretty much have to buy it from chemical suppliers online and it comes in a limited palette of colours. But you'd then have to paint on the plaid, and I feel like the money and time spent finding, buying, shipping, and administering disperse dye and then painting stripes is more painful than finding a black and white plaid and sewing your own box-pleated rectangle skirt.

This skirt is not a good candidate for that character. Changing colors, multiple colors, in an already existing pleat.... bleah. Just keep looking for the right plaid.

Now what if I had an all black skirt? Could I just use fabric paint and painted on the plaid myself? I was told by someone at a craft store I could do that but I wanted to get a second opinion.

yes you can, tho it once again depends on the fabric.
