Corset Top help
I guess I should post this in this forum as well. I am kind of stumped and intimidated by this project honestly.
I have been putting off creating this top for a while and now I have most of the rest of the costume done. The logistics of how to put this together are just... throwing me off though. And I have huge boobs so I DEFINITELY need the support from a bra, and I'm wanting to get an underbust corset to cinch me in. But how the hell would I put both of them together Frankenstein style without adding bulk/pinching my boobs and armpits? ![]() ![]() Any tips at all will be appreciated. ![]() |

I would suggest using the corset vest in this pattern: http://www.simplicity.com/p-1942-costumes.aspx#t-2 and doing a few modifications/additions for the hanging garter belt bit, and the collar. The bra doesn't necessarily need to be attached - it can be a separate piece. You would just have to make a mock up in scrap or muslin and fit it first, so that the curves under the bust reach high enough to cover the bottom of the bra. Use a stiff fabric (canvas or upholstery) for the lining or the single layer if you don't want a lining.
For example, an acquaintance of mine I met at a Steampunk con did this: http://www.behance.net/analise/frame/3479957

I agree with most of the above. I'd like to add, try studying corset construction. Corsets Historical patterns and techniques is a good book. Cut, boning, and fabric all lend to support and shape.

I think it would look better if it were one whole piece personally but.. I guess I don't know how to cut down bulk on my bust and underbust area? While still holding the girls up?

the key to support is the cup proper (fitting correctly) and the band. In a corset, adjusting the whole uppermost section, say the top three inches of the corset, are where you will succeed or fail.
It's not so much a matter of engineering, as tailoring the engineered bits to fit best.

I have a bra I can scrap with the right fit in the boobs (thank god...) but seeing how much shorter I should make the front panels and such? |

The design looks like it would allow you to put underwire and padding in the "cups". Create an interior bra of sorts.
Edit: just read your last post. Please ignore mine! |

Yes, make a form. the further your shape is from 'average' the more helpful it is to have a form that is actually your shape.
