Clarke published a collection of short stories set in the same sort of alternate universe back in 2006; I haven't read it but it's on my list. I enjoyed Strange & Norrell, but the ending felt a little lackluster compared to the rich detail in the rest of the novel.

I'm usually disappointed by endings, though.

Also on my list: The Sparrow by Mary Doria Russell.

It's interesting but disturbing. I read it a long time ago. In my fuzzy memory I think that it was good, not great. I recall having some issues with her style and I don't think that I agreed with what I think was her point but I don't remember specifically why I think that. I did like it enough that I read the sequel - Children of God.

Hm. I wonder if it's more disturbing than Miéville's Perdido Street Station. I thought that was pretty relentlessly upsetting.

Not familiar with it and couldn't really tell from the synopsis. All I'll say about The Sparrow is that terrible terrible things happen to good people. It's definitely worth reading, but it's not a cheery book. I think that she might have meant for it to be somewhat redemptive at the end, but I couldn't get past the horror. I seem to recall that Children of God was less awful that way.

Pretty Woman by Fern Michaels - Very disappointing even for a romance.
American Heiress by Daisy Goodwin - A first novel and it shows. She clearly like romance novels old and new.
Lottery by Patricia Wood - Didn't like the endding, can't say more or I'll spoil it.
Hangman's Daughter by Oliver Pötzsch - Read this several years back, but I'm reminded of it because I found out today that there are two more in the series. LOVE this book.

On a side note, has anyone ever read of heard of The Demi-monde Saga? I read the summary on the Winter dust jacket and it just confused me. I don't think the person who wrote the summary knew what they where talking about. It sounds like a cross between Escape from LA, Soldier, and Dark City (or a bad session in the Holodeck). However, they call it Steampunk and it's set in a 2018 computer?

Pride and Prejudice. I feel like it's really stretched out when it could've been more concise, but I still enjoyed it. XD

The Magicians, by Lev Grossman. Yes, still. It's a fantastic book (quickly overcoming Harry Potter as a favorite) but I can only read about 20 pages before I have to put it down again.

I Know This Much Is True by Wally Lamb. I've been reading it for the past 2 months. Usually I don't take this long to read a book, but it's 900 pages... and parts of it is disturbing to read. But it's really good and has become one of my favorite books. I'll definitely be reading his other books after I finish this.

The Sense of Being Stared At by Rupert Sheldrake.

If any of you have played 9 Hours, 9 Persons, 9 Doors or Zero Escape: Virtue's Last Reward, this book is by one of the scientists that they mention later on.
